OBITUARY

Allan R. Drebin was born on March 17, 1936, to parents Harry and Dorothy Drebin. A longtime resident of Evanston, IL, Allan moved to Palo Alto, CA, in 2020.

Allan was the beloved husband of the late Ellen Drebin for 60 years. He is the cherished father of Donna (Ken) Abosch and Bob (Vanessa) Drebin; the loving grandfather of Danny Abosch (Mira Magrill), Michael (Emily) Abosch, Jordan Abosch, Ryan Drebin (Annie Wilks), Malaika (Trevor) Smyth, Alina Drebin, and Claire Drebin; and the adoring great-grandfather of four. He was the brother of the late Martin Drebin.

Allan began his teaching career as a professor at UCLA (1960-1965) and then taught at Cornell University (1965-1969) before returning home to the Chicago area to start a position that would span four decades as an accounting professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management (1969-2009). Upon his retirement in 2009, he became a Professor Emeritus of Accounting Information and Management at the Kellogg School.

Highlights of his remarkable career at the Kellogg School of Management include serving as chairman of the Accounting Information & Management Department for four years, creating an undergraduate accounting course, developing the idea for Northwestern University’s Residential College of Commerce and Industry (now called Ayers Residential College of Commerce and Industry), and traveling to Thailand many times as a visiting professor at the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

An arts enthusiast, Allan proudly supported the local arts community by serving as treasurer of the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation and on the boards of various professional and civic organizations, including the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Evanston Arts Council, the Hubbard Street Dance Company, the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Columbia College-Chicago, and the Music Advisory Board of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music.

Professor Allan Drebin inspired me to sit for the cpa exam. Everyone told me that I had too much personality and should go into marketing. But I knew professor Drebin was hilarious and ironic. I worked with him each Sunday at the programmatic college of commerce and industry, which was a very important part of my college years. If he could be an accountant, there was hope for me. I will miss Allan a great deal. We served on the lyric opera of Chicago board together and he was always supportive. My condolences to his family.

Allan's generosity touched me in many ways. He was a wonderful guide in my fundraising efforts and he was always available to help. I was introduced to the Ryan Opera Center by Allan. His love of music and art was always apparent and he supported it and shared it with everyone. I think of him often and I will miss him.

I extend sincere condolences on the passing of Allan Drebin. I was present for Ellen's memorial service and regret watching Allan's service online.

Allan and Ellen were tremendous supporters of the Bienen School during my tenure as Dean (2003-2022). Their personal contributions as well as the gifts from The Cheney Foundation, provided significant support to the School. New initiatives and special events resulted from this philanthropy and Bienen students and faculty were and remain the beneficiaries.

God bless Allan. I know he and Ellen are together once again.

I will always be thankful for the time I spent as Professor Drebin’s Teaching Assistant at the School of Professional Studies. He was so very generous with his time and his wisdom, encouraging me to offer ideas and assume greater levels of responsibility in his accounting course. I still recall our conversations about teaching because he was so passionate about ensuring the best learning experience for each student. It’s a standard that I will continue to uphold in my classroom. I consider myself truly lucky to have been blessed by his kindness and his generosity. My condolences to his family.
