OBITUARY

JOAN BARBARA GOLDSTONE MANN
mother of Jane Talesnick

If anybody ever asked my mother what were the most important things in her life, she would say hands-down her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They lit up her life.

Mom loved babies, and would watch them everywhere she was; airports, restaurants, even walking down the street.

My mom also loved people, so she formally studied anthropology and would later travel all over the world meeting indigenous people. She wanted to know everybody’s stories; how they became the individuals that they were.

My mom drew, painted, wove, lithographed, etc., and sold others artists crafts and jewelry.

When she traveled with her loving, devoted husband, Douglas Mann z”l, she would seek out local artisans and craftsmen. Consequently, to walk into their home was like touring a beautiful museum.

Mom donated her time as an art docent; she volunteered with Art to the Schools and Meals on Wheels; and she advocated on behalf of children who were in the foster system in Michigan.

I would talk with my mom every morning. We discussed our frustration with politics.

She would recommend books for me to read and movies for me to see. Mom was very involved with current events, chamber music, and maintained an enormous number of friendships.

My mom was an only child, and was accustomed to making her own decisions. She didn’t like taking directions from anybody, even her three strong daughters, who are also very independent and walk their own paths.

On the way home from a night out with friends, she fractured her hip and that led to a downhill course.

She was gathered by her ancestors on the 5th of Kislev.
She is mourned by her children and their spouses: Scott (Lynn), Jill (Charles), Andrea (Alan), Jane, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren: Leah (Adrian), Anaiya, Azai, Ruthie (Steve), Brian (Shannon), Eleanor, Henry, Elliott (Sarah). Joseph (Emily),Harrison, Molly, Hannah, Aaron, Keren (Guy), Adi, Emily (Adam), Claire (Dave) Riley, Bridget (Zach).

One of my mom’s dying wishes was to be at her own home at the end, so before I returned from Novi, Michigan, we made sure that she was peacefully situated in her beautiful home.
