The family wishes to thank and acknowledge the wonderful caregivers Eugene and Sandra. Dorothy was an amazing woman with an intellect, compassion, elegance, and grace that was surpassed by few. Her physical beauty was quite striking as well. Her generosity and involvement in many organizations and charities reflects her intense commitment to justice, individual freedoms, and worthy progressive causes. She was also known for some of the highest caliber skills in backgammon, bridge, and crossword puzzles to name just a few. Most of all she will be remembered for the unconditional love that she bestowed upon her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members and friends. I am so sad to learn that the world has lost Dorothy Press. She and Alan were extraordinary people. Always forthright and kind, it was a pleasure to visit them in their beautiful environment, with the best examples of art by important artists, displayed intelligently and often surprisingly. Speaking with them about nearly any topic was fun and enlightening. Individually and as a couple, they were supremely stylish.

On behalf of the Department of Prints and Drawings at The Art Institute of Chicago, I offer condolences to their family. Knowing Dorothy and Alan was a privilege.

Years ago, Alan show me a picture by Cindy Sherman of a dark-haired woman in sunglasses opening a sliding glass door peering out of an undefined room into the bright Hollywood sunshine. "This picture reminds me me of Dorothy" he said with great pride.

I have know Dorothy since the 1970's. My role at that the time Alan showed me the Sherman picture was to be of service to both as they built their photography collection, and my first thoughts were of the rarity and quality of the image. Over time though, that particular Sherman has come to represent to me the admiration and love that Alan & Dorothy had for each other and their life together. A love and life which included a large extended family of children, step children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren along with art, music, books, politics, bridge and travel.

Early last spring when Dorothy and I were having lunch at Le Colonial, a friend of mine came by and commented on how she looked like a movie star. Alan was so right: glamourous, prone to sunglasses and ready to lean into the next great adventure.

I will miss my friend Dorothy but she will never leave me.

My love and condolences to her family,
Carol Ehlers

No doubt, that Dorothy, and Alan were two of the nicest, kindest, caring people at the CME. Conducting routine, daily business with them was like dealing with friends. Some woman, was Dorothy. Some gentleman was Alan. Although it’s been many years, it’s easy to remember quality people. To Steve, and to Beth, (old friends), I’m so happy you were enriched for many years, by sharing life and love with One Cool Woman! May her memory make you smile, and my thoughts are with you.
