OBITUARY

David Louis Bernstein

May 6, 1932 - August 17, 2023. David was the beloved husband and best friend of Gerry, with whom he had a "love affair" as he put it, that lasted 69 years until her passing on June 1, 2023. David was preceded in death as well by his parents, Arthur and Lillian Bernstein, and his much older adoring sister Helen and brother Paul. David grew up in Paterson, NJ, and moved to Tulsa in his early twenties. Over several decades he built a humanitarian legacy in leadership at the Mental Health Association, Community Service Council, and Tulsa Jewish Federation. But above all his proudest accomplishment was his family. He was a devoted father to Lori (Dr. Frederick) Wittlin, Pam (Cary) Schack, Jeff (Miriam), and Beth Lobel (partner, Les Mittman). He greatly treasured his role as grandfather of 14 and proud great-grandfather of 47. David was known for his outgoing nature, his listening ear, and his broad shoulders to lean on. He touched the lives not only of his family and friends, but countless others he helped throughout the community. He will be greatly missed by many. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 18, 2023, at 12 pm, at Jewish Oakridge Cemetery, 4301 West Roosevelt Road (1/4 mile west of Mannheim Rd.), Hillside, IL. The family requests that donations in David's name be made to: Park Plaza Attn: Elly Bauman, 6840 N Sacramento Ave., Chicago, IL 60645 To view the funeral livestream, please visit www.cjfinfo.com and click on David Bernstein. I grew up with David it seems always in my life. A leader, compassionate man, a man of values and strength. A man that showed only dignity and respect for all. Disagreements yes. Always friendship and finding a productive way for the community to move forward. David mentored me as a young volunteer. He is a generational friend to me. With sympathy's. Lori Frank

I worked for the Community Service Council in Tulsa when Dave was the Executive Director. He was one of the kindest people I have ever known and a great boss. I am sorry to hear of his death. I remember how devoted he was to his wife and children. My condolences to his family.
