OBITUARY

Richard Arthur Dublin, age 88, beloved husband of Hylene S. Dublin, nee Stiefel, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Loving father of Matt (Lisa) Dublin and Mara (Jed) Foster. Dear grandfather of Asher, Avery, Cole, Evan, Reed and step-grandchildren James, Aly and Matthew. Cherished brother of the late Joan (the late Richard) Reinhardt and the late Edward (the late Susan) Dublin. Adored son of the late Robert Dublin and Agnes Dublin, nee Daly.

Richard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend whose life was defined by family, service, compassion and a strong commitment to helping others. Richard grew up in Des Plaines with his sister Joan and brother Edward. He attended Maine East High School and later Miami University, where he and Edward were members of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Their close relationship continued throughout their lives, including many years living near one another. An accomplished athlete, Richard placed second in the Illinois state high school wrestling championships in 1955 in the under-120-pound division. He remained active in sports throughout his life and enjoyed coaching and supporting his children's teams. After meeting Hylene in graduate school, they married in 1964 and both pursued careers in social work. Richard devoted more than 30 years to Jewish Family and Community Service of Chicago, ultimately serving as Associate Executive Director. Throughout his career, he was known for his compassion, accessibility and dedication to those he served.

Richard brought that same devotion to his family. He was a loving and generous father who was actively involved in his children's lives and remained a source of support and guidance throughout their adulthood. He was also known for his sense of humor, his love of cooking and his distinctive personality, including his famously enduring mustache. Richard possessed a calm and thoughtful nature and often offered simple, practical advice to those he loved. His kindness, warmth and ability to connect with people left a lasting impression on his family, friends and colleagues. In his later years, Richard faced the challenges of Alzheimer's disease with remarkable positivity and resilience. Richard's life was one of service, family, friendship and love. He devoted his career to helping others, cherished his wife and family, maintained a lifelong bond with his brother, and brought warmth and humor to the many people fortunate enough to know him.

Sending my deepest condolences to Dick's family. He was small in stature but a larger than life, wise presence. Dick was a clinical executive when I joined JFCS in 1998, right out of graduate school. There are still pearls of Dick Dublin wisdom that I carry forth in my work with clients every day. The rule of thirds, the likely need of a person to come more frequently if they want to reduce treatment frequency, to name a few. His mentorship helped me understand my clients more deeply and his wisdom taught me to listen more deeply. His clinical gifts helped to shape so many social workers and in turn left a lasting positive effect on so many clients ' lives. His memory continues to be a blessing.

Dick Dublin was an excellent consultant to me in my clinical work at JCFS Chicago over many years. I found him to be insightful, creative and supportive when I was struggling with very challenging clients. I will always remember his sense of humor and his stories about his college days, including the one about a ferret residing in his fraternity house who stole hundreds of his fraternity brothers' socks which he hid under a couch. The socks were discovered when Dick was moving out during graduation weekend.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. Uncle Richie was a wonderful
Man. I have lots of fond memories at their home and Susan & Ed’s as well. Always lots of laughter, food and great stories. It was always fun to listen to Richie, and Ed (grumps) tell stories from their early days growing up and from raising all of you. There was always laughter and Good Food.
Sending my thoughts, prayers and good memories to you all. Hugs & Love, Susan and Todd

We were long, long term neighbors in Wilmette and family friends - We raised our children together. We traveled together. Our big orange cat loved Richard's hair and might leap onto his head if he had the chance. We were so fortunate to know and enjoy Richard and his family. They sit among all our loved ones sit inside us.
Lifestream will not open for us to watch. We are very, very sad to miss the service.

I am so sorry I was unable to attend the funeral. Dick was a huge positive influence on me and my career at JCFS. For years he led the student supervisors group, and he shaped the way I approached supervision with students and staff. He was a steady guiding force in the agency and for me personally. He was supportive, and direct, and clear. You always knew where he stood on an issue and where you stood with him. Dick directly and indirectly impacted the professions and lives of so many students, staff and clients. I am so sorry for your loss. May his memory be for a blessing.
