OBITUARY

Joseph Allan Smith, age 82.

Beloved husband of Marilyn, nee Grossman for 59 years. Loving father of Jennifer (Samuel) Sweatt and Gregory (Dennis) Smith. Proud grandfather of Zachary and Rachel. Preceded in death by his sister Elaine Weinstein.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 21, 1944, Joe graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1962 and received his bachelor’s degree in 1966 from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where he met his bride, Marilyn. Joe and Marilyn wed in 1967 while Joe was working for the Internal Revenue Service and attending Cleveland Marshall Law School at night. After earning his Juris Doctorate, Joe worked for the national accounting firms Price Waterhouse in Cleveland and Alexander Grant in both Columbus and Cincinnati before starting his own accounting firm. Joe transitioned into Financial Planning services, and this remained his primary focus when relocating to Chicagoland after 30 years in Cincinnati, and he continued that work into his 80’s. Joe enjoyed meeting new people and helping them achieve their financial goals.

Joe and Marilyn enjoyed their travels all around the world, starting their adventures with a honeymoon trip to Cape Cod and the Islands. They returned to this destination many times over the years, and their family continues this tradition. A special thank you to the good people at Suncrest Hospice for their kind, compassionate care for Joe and his family.

It's hard to imagine that it was around 55 years ago, when we were enjoying bridge, brownies and (Joe's) barbecues at your home, with one, and then two little ones usually sleeping upstairs. It feels so recent. May he continue to live so vividly for each of you. It was inspiring to be able to "join you" in today's service for Joe.
Sending you hugs and love,
