Dr. James Bahcall was a teacher of mine at Northwestern University Dental School in 1997 and 1998. As a third and fourth year dental student I found Endodontics very intimidating. Dr. Bahcall had a big smile for everyone.
He was brilliant, not just a gifted endodontist and educator.
He was warm and reassuring for dental students like me.
He would review the concepts with me, make sure I understood what I had to do, more like a father, than a professor. He relieved the apprehension that I had about the procedure. All of my faculty at Northwestern were impressed with him. Having taught orthodontics for 16 years, I have some insight into how much effort, energy, and enthusiasm that must have required. I am also aware that I have never come close to being the teacher that Dr. Bahcall was for me. But he is an inspiration for me. Dr. Bahcall is a paradigm for me to attempt to emulate. What a gift it is to have someone, like him, in your day. Thank you Dr. Bahcall, and thank you to the Bahcall family for loving him and bolstering him, which allowed us to benefit from the altruism he shared so readily.

I had the honor and pleasure of working with Jim for several years at Midwestern University. We shared a passion for teaching and quickly became friends. He greeted everyone with a warm smile. His door was always open to all. Jim was an outstanding instructor. He was one of those rare individuals who possessed both excellent clinical and teaching skills. Jim's students respected and admired him. His passing is a great loss to many. My deepest condolences to his family.

I will always remember Jim's smile and his cheerful voice. I was one of his endo residents when he first came to Marquette. Deborah and I remember you Amy. I have no words for your great loss. May God comfort you and your children, and bless you and keep you, and make his face to shine upon you and show you his favor, and lift his face toward you and give you his peace. Reginald Westphal
