The name "Ethel Liten" was commonly spoken in the greatest esteem around our house growing up. The Litens and my parents, Dick and Olga Haigh, were friends and neighbors in the 60's and early 70's. My mom remained in close contact with Ethel even after all these years and great distances between them.

I sent Mrs. Liten a card for her 100th birthday, and was delighted when she called me in Michigan to thank me. I hadn't seen her since I was in elementary school, but she took the time to seek out my contact information, and we had a delightful conversation. I was pleased to be able to share with her how beloved to my mom she was. I am grateful my parents had such lovely friends in the Litens. The a friends of my parents in our 1960's Maple Avenue neighborhood were remarkable and influential presences for my siblings and I in our formative years, and the Litens were a huge part of that group. Mom always just loved Ethel and I know she will miss their frequent contact, and hold Ethel in her heart always.

I extend my deepest condolences to Mrs. Liten's entire family.

Sincerely,
Missy Haigh

I am deeply sorry to hear about the loss of the woman that I always remember as Mrs. Liten, neighborhood mom and champion of many causes that united our neighborhood in ways that I could only fully appreciate as an adult, looking back upon our incredible childhood in Evanston. Mrs. Linton was a beautiful, elegant and kind woman and I’m so grateful to have grown up knowing her.
My love deepest condolences to all of you

Ethel was my neighbor, my friend, my comrade in progressive causes, and my role model. She aged - as she lived - with grace and dignity, always with a book in her lap and music in the background. I mourn her loss and grieve for her loving children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom - amazingly! - remained within a radius of a few miles. I hope you realize how rare and wonderful your family is.
