OBITUARY

Rachel Louise Silverman nee Bilow, Age 87

Loving mother of Michael (Ellen Fiedelholtz) Silverman, Sheldon (Julie) Silverman and Dr. Miriam (Livia Ondi) Silverman.
Proud Bubbe of Jake Silverman, Graham Silverman, Arielle Silverman and Emme Silverman.
Dear sister of Gary (the late Michele Shoresmen) Bilow and David (the late Barbara) Bilow, and loving daughter of Irving and Gertrude Bilow.
Cherished sister-in-law to Steven (Cynthia) Silverman.
She will be missed by nephews Josh Bilow, Norm Bilow, Ben Bilow and the late Lee Bilow.

Rachel Silverman grew up on Juneway Terrace in Chicago, graduating from Sullivan high school, and attending a few semesters at the University of Illinois. She married Alan Silverman in her early twenties, having three kids in three years. She loved being a mom and cheered her children’s efforts and accomplishments, encouraging them to choose their own paths in life and explore the world. Rachel spent many afternoons at the Bernard Horwich Jewish Community Center hauling her kids to swim team practice for years and making lots of swim team friends. The friends of her children were all very fond of Rachel and particularly appreciative of her brownies and her interest in their lives.

While raising her kids, Rachel was also involved in building the Mayer Kaplan JCC in Skokie, where she became a board member. After getting divorced, she jumped headfirst into work, becoming a manufacturer’s representative, driving all across the Midwest to visit with her clients and customers. Rachel completely changed careers after a few years and began working in the senior community industry, rising to the position of executive director of a number of senior communities in the Chicago area and in San Diego. She also served as the Director of the Senior Adult program at Camp Chi in Wisconsin (she attended Camp Chi as a girl, and her children and grandchildren also attended Camp Chi). Rachel was also a long-time volunteer at Evanston Hospital.

Rachel Silverman had a positive impact on everyone she met. She laughed often and was the best, most encouraging audience for the comedy stylings of her children. She was an adventurous woman with an optimistic outlook. Rachel was kind and fun-loving, and her generous spirit made it easy to love and be friends with her. We will miss her.

I'm sorry to read about Rachel's passing. She was my mother's 1st cousin Shirley Panzer Levey. My grandparents, Nathan and Julia Mazur Panzer. I live in Phoenix, AZ , 45 years next month. Aunt Gertie was my grandmother's sister. Last, month. I read the passing of cousin Ruby Kaufman in Tempe. I have many fond memories of the Cousins' Club meetings
at the Bilow home on Juneway Terrace. Uncle Irv and Aunt Gertie were wonderful hosts. I got to meet my cousins and visit with the rest of the family. A ton of pictures were taken through those years. I have the picture album. Such wonderful memories.

All my love to my dearest, oldest, friend, Rachel's family.
Rachel and I knew each other for 77 years. It's a long time to be able to hang onto a rich friendship such as we had. She is so close to my heart that I feel her spirit still beating in mine. It will always be that way. Her very sweet tributes, offered to her at her funeral today, were extremely touching and informative.
Thank you for saying all those extra stories that so enriched
all our lives.
Much love

We had the pleasure of knowing Rachel as our dinner tablemate for only a short period of time. However, during that time she generously wanted to share her meals with us.
She was always pleased to see us and greeted us warmly. When she left the table she waved good bye and would often blow a kiss. It was indeed a joy to have spent time with Rachel.

I met Rachel for the first time having interviewed for her first job at Senior Lifestyle. We had done a development on the south side in Hyde Park at 51st and Hyde Park Blvd. This was our first multi family project after having built The Breakers at Edgewater and The Breakers at Golf Mill in 88’ and 90’. Rachel became the first Sales Counselor for us and she and I melded so well in that setting of an incredible south side mix of wonderful people of all financial backgrounds. Glad to have been the one to spot her talents as she went on to Executive Director roles. So glad I saw her while on a client visit at The Merion a few years back. Nice knowing she had good care there and at Lincolnwood Place, an SLC community.
So sorry to hear of her passing. May her memory and contributions be for a blessing.
