OBITUARY

Dr. Robert B. Pildes passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 98 and 11/12ths. Bob is survived by his wife Rosita, to whom he was happily married for 73 years, his son Richard (Ashley Berner) and daughter Ellyn (John Bank), as well as three grandchildren, Nikki Bank (Drew Lewis) Kara Bank (Joe Dobell), Ryan Pildes Eliasberg, and one great grandson, Caleb Bank-Lewis. His sister Evelyn (Philip) Warren and her husband pre-deceased him.

Bob was a renowned obstetrician and gynecologist in private practice. He specialized in fertility treatment and cancer surgery. He was one of the early clinical researchers who helped establish Clomid as a successful treatment for infertility in women, including publishing landmark studies that were critical in the FDA’s approval of the drug in 1967 and its widespread clinical use. At the time, infertility treatments were limited. He was considered a meticulous surgeon with tremendous patience and technical skill. His physical stamina was extraordinary; he could be up all night with deliveries, then perform complex surgery during the day. He served on staff at Mount Sinai and Edgewater Hospitals and later was a founding staff member at Gottlieb Hospital. His patients and office staff adored him. He delivered the children of many family members, including his own granddaughter.

Bob came from humble origins. Born on the west side of Chicago to parents who immigrated from Latvia and Poland, his father was a tailor. Being drafted into the military one semester into college changed his life in two momentous ways. First, Bob had a scientific mind, loved animals and nature, and had planned to be a zoologist. But a sergeant convinced him he should turn his scientific interest toward an area that would help people by going into medicine.

Second, being in the military delayed his college years, which enabled him to meet the love of his life, Rosita, in a zoology class at the University of Illinois/Champagne Urbana. They became lab and study partners, while enjoying post-study sessions with malted shakes. They married one week before medical school graduation.

Never in a bad mood, Bob had an infinite capacity to enjoy life and unlimited curiosity. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight and eventually became an award-winning philatelist best known for his extensive collection and specialized expertise on Israeli philately. He and Rosita traveled and collected art from around the world, with Bob having a particular interest in African sculpture. He consumed several newspapers and journals regularly and remained deeply engaged in politics and world affairs until the very end. He was an extremely generous, warm, and optimistic soul who remained deeply devoted to friends, colleagues, and extended family.

Service will be held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 12 noon at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd. (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the World Wildlife Fund, the Society of Israel Philatelists, and Birthright Israel. To attend the livestream, please visit our website. Having known your dad for my entire life, there are so many memories that come to mind. But the one thing that strings them all together is the way your dad laughed. I can literally hear him in my head right now as I am writing this. What a kind and thoughtful person your dad always was and he will clearly be missed by many.

My heart goes out to Rosita and all of his family. I worked for Dr Pildes from 1989 until his retirement in 1994 as his Business Manager. He was without a doubt one of the most influential people in my life! He was my boss my doctor and my friend, and he was amazing at all three! In a sense he helped me become the person I am.

On a lighter note I am thinking of some things he taught me that I carry with me to this day...
Football is a very cerebral sport!
The proper way to have a steak prepared is never cooked more than medium! The best cut is always with the bone on!
If you did something stupid he would let you know just how stupid it was but he still loved you! He genuinely cared about people and he cared about his patients. He had a brilliant mind and was an amazing diagnostician! He practiced the art of medicine like no other physician I have met to date. He taught me that all people, no matter from what walk of life are worthy to be treated with care and respect. Actually my mother taught me that but he was the first physician that I met with that ethic. After Dr Pildes retired I had a miscarriage and a year later was expecting again. He was so worried about me he showed up at my new office to make sure I was doing everything necessary for a successful pregnancy. He and Rosita were the first two in my hospital room right after my daughter was born ! Dr Pildes you will always be in my heart and every time I hear a good joke I will picture you writing it done in your little book! Until we meet again much love, Kathy

Dear Rosita,
You probably don't remember who I am, but Chuck and I were friends of Nomi and Burt Kanter, which I think is how I know you.
I'm sorry to learn of Bob's passing but comforted to know that you had him until now. Chuck died 22 years ago.
I see that you are still in the beautiful house across from Beth Emet. I now live in a condo in downtown Evanston and have caregivers 8 hours a day, in two shifts..
I love the photo of you and Bob and I would still recognize you. I'm 95, and you must be of similar vintage.
I just want you to know that you and Bob are memorable!
