OBITUARY
Howard M. Rice MD, age 86.
Beloved husband for 64 years to his college sweetheart Jean, nee Sievers. Loving father of Jennifer (Michael) Brown, Alan (Pamela) Rice, Elise (Dr. Marc) Swatez, and Michael (Susan) Rice. Dear son of the late Julia and Nathan Rice. Devoted brother of the late Fredrick Rice. Proud grandfather of Rachel Brown, Benjamin (Nicole) Brown, Joelle Swatez, Joshua Swatez, Micah Swatez, Asher Rice, and Eviana Rice. Great grandfather of Sophie Brown. Following medical school graduation from Indiana University, Dr. Rice completed his Residency at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. He then joined the US Air Force as a Captain at Laughlin Air Force base where he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He then moved his family to Chicago where he was an associate with Drs. Alfred and Howard Traisman. In 1972 he started a solo practice in Lincoln Park which later became Town and Country Pediatrics. Through hard work and many sacrifices, he grew the practice to include 18 doctors, 5 Nurse Practitioners, 3 locations and over 35,000 patients. He served on the faculty at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie’s Children Hospital for over 45 years. Dr. Rice was a longtime member of Congregation Bnai Emunah (which later merged with Beth Hillel) where he served on the Board of Directors for many years including the position of Vice President of the Ritual Committee. As a lifelong learner he enjoyed reading, taking classes on a variety of topics, and traveling the world.
