OBITUARY

Lawrence (Larry) Machtinger, 88, passed away on May 5, 2024. Larry was the beloved husband of Dory Machtinger. Cherished father of Marc (Julie) Machtinger and Rebecca (Jamon) Heller. Loving grandfather of Ari, Jared, Dalia, and Maya. Dear brother-in-law of Connie (Jim Girard) Diamant and uncle of Gabriel (Julia Bogolin) Soll. Devoted son of the late Eva and Harry Machtinger and loving son-in-law of the late Gretl and Max Diamant. Younger brother of the late Sam (Pauline) Machtinger, Eve (Sidney) Bleich, and Pearlie (Buddy and Max) Morrison.

After growing up and meeting in St Louis, Dory and Larry spent most of their nearly 60 years of marriage together in Flossmoor, IL. Larry was a professor emeritus of mathematics at Purdue University, where for decades he shared his love of math and learning with numerous students. Many people remember his kindness towards all, and his creative sense of humor – particularly his love of puns. Larry was a music lover (particularly opera, classical, and Klezmer) and an avid and loyal supporter of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. He loved traveling, photography, pocket knives, watches, belt buckles, flashlights, cats, and art… and above all, his family, each of whom he deeply cherished.

Funeral will be held at noon on May 10, 2024, at Shalom Memorial Cemetery, 1700 West Rand Road, Arlington Heights, IL. To view the livestream, please visit our website. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Larry’s name to the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, ipomusic.org/. I did not know that Larry had so many interests. I am glad that I was able to observe the service and i thought the Cantor did a great job. Larry will be missed by many people. I know he will rest in peace.
