OBITUARY

Ronald Morrow Portugal, age 91, of Northbrook passed away quietly and without pain on May 4, 2022. Beloved husband of 62 years to Anita (Baskin); cherished father of Cary Portugal and Lauren Kaufman (Chuck); loving grandfather of Matthew and Allison Portugal; “papo” of Jamie and Alex Kaufman. Ronald was born in Chicago to the late George and the late Edith Portugal (Greenberg). He was the oldest of their four sons: Mitchell (Mavis); Glenn (Susan); and the late Gerald (survived by Ruth). The age difference between Ron and his youngest brother is 18 years. Ron was the original “I’m All Right” guy. If something went wrong he would always say “I’m All Right” even if it wasn’t. Always pleasant and sociable, he had a sense of humor and was an intrepid optimist. Ron was always a loving and loyal father and grandfather. He liked nothing better than being proud of his grandchildren’s activities. He was proud to be a Jew, following the tenets of Judiasm. and considered himself the Patriarch of a large extended family. Ron grew up in Albany Park and attended Bateman School and Von Steuben High School. He attended Wright College but left after 2 years to work at Shure Brothers where he used roller skates to zip through their vast warehouse. He held a number of jobs to support his family; but worked a second job in the Marshall Field Men’s Department in Old Orchard from its opening in 1958 through 1980. After Ron retired from the workforce he spent the next 20 years as an active volunteer for the Chicago Botanic Garden. Also he enjoyed being a member of The Saints, and ushered at many plays and entertainment events. Ron spent much time at the Northbrook Public Library and attended their Movies and Lectures regularly. Private Graveside services will be held on Monday at 1:00 pm.
