OBITUARY

David Garfield, MD died on October 4th 2024 after a long illness. From a young age, David aways knew he had a calling to help others. In middle school, the business card he made in shop class said "Need advice? Call Garfield". Fondly known as "Gar," he spent his young adolescence getting into mild mischief with his best friends while simultaneously excelling in school. He graduated magna cum laude from Haverford college in 1974, majoring in english literature and biochemistry. He attended medical school at the University of California San Francisco. His psychiatry residency was at the Massachusetts Mental Health center at Harvard Medical School. He later trained in psychoanalysis and continued on the faculty of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. He was a Lifetime Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. David was Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and served as faculty at Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago for 30 years.
David's love of people and stories, combined with his warmth and capacity to connect deeply, resulted in a rewarding and multifaceted career. He was dedicated to his work with patients. He trained and taught several hundred medical students and residents. He published numerous professional articles. His book, Unbearable Affect (1995, second edition 2009) focused on the role of emotion in the process of psychotherapy with psychotic patients.
David was beloved husband to Bonnie, loving father of Jenny (Jeffrey) Glazer, and son Jacob Garfield; cherished grandfather of Evan, Harry and Ari David Glazer; and loving brother of Robert (Sandy) Garfield and his late sister Deborah (Bruce) Wunnicke.
As passionate as he was about his work, he dearly loved his family and friends. He had a zest for life, lived a good one, and will be dearly missed. Services Tuesday, October 8th at 2pm at North Shore Congregation Israel. 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe, IL 60022. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's name may be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI); nami.org or Congregation Hakafa; hakafa.org.
