I never met Edryce or Ed yet they played an important part in highly impressionable childhood in London (England). Ed and Edryce became good friends with my mother's brother, Sidney Pizan (who also sadly passed away recently), possibly through his role as an advertising photographer, but I am not actually sure how they met. However, for a period spanning the late 1960’s until the early 80’s they met on many occasions, and it was Sidney’s vivid accounts of these meetings which left me with so many indelible vicarious memories. The majority of their time together was in London when the Caddens would stay at Clarridges Hotel, and always invite Sidney, often together with my mother Hannah (also sadly deceased) to dine with them at places like La Mirabel and Cicone. To a little boy, growing up in an orthodox Jewish community in suburban London, my mother’s descriptions of those meals at those restaurants fired my imagination – she and Edryce always had Dover sole, so my mum assured me! Sidney went to Chicago twice as guests of Ed and Edryce, and his descriptions of his adventures there excited me even more and significantly coloured my future teenage and adult life. So, although we never met, the Caddens formed an influential part of my childhood. Moreover, both Sidney and Hannah had only good things to say about the Ed and Edryce, describing them as clever, charming, kind and generous. Thank you Edryce for the vicarious memories.
