OBITUARY

Tom Horwich of Winnetka passed peacefully at home October 31st surrounded by his family. Tom was born on July 20, 1940 in Hyde Park, Illinois and graduated from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He was the grandson of Chicago Jewish Philanthropist Bernard Horwich of the Bernard Horwich JCC in Skokie, IL.

Tom was a quiet force in Chicago real estate, beginning in commercial real estate development and management. In 1996, Tom purchased Rubloff Residential Properties and under his leadership and vision created a firm often credited with changing the residential real estate landscape of Chicago.

Family and philanthropy were Tom's true passions. He firmly believed that people could achieve success and have a positive effect on the world around them when afforded opportunities. Tom was instrumental in assisting countless students receive scholarships to attend college. Charitable commitments close to his heart included JUF, Western Golf Evans Scholars Foundation and The Hun School.

Tom loved walking his golden retrievers as much as he enjoyed staring down a birdie putt. He was influential in establishing the first dog beach in Winnetka and took great joy watching the canine community enjoy the waves. Tom was an avid golfer and was fortunate to play rounds with Tiger Woods, Tom Watson and John Daly.

Tom had a great sense of humor and was a master joke teller. He had a joke for every occasion and likely would be making one about writing obituaries if he had the chance.

He was a quiet man who was an exceptional listener. When he spoke, he graciously commanded the attention of a room.
Tom is survived by his wife Vicki, his daughter Jamie (David Thompson), grandchildren Lyla and Zoe Thompson and his son Doug.

Tom was a gentleman and a gentle man...
He will be missed by all who were lucky to cross his path...

I was so sad to hear of Tom’s passing. He has always been so kind to me. It was always a joy when I saw him either with my parents or at Northmore. His smile and light hearted ways always brought joy to my heart. The world will be a little darker with out him, but God will be a little happier and lighter.

We were so saddened to hear about Tommy's passing this morning. It wasn't long ago that we saw you at Ravinia. At this time memories rush in -Michael playing softball in Lincoln Park when both were in their 20's, spending time with you when we were first married at some resort in the Carribean, attending events at the Standard Club, having fun at a birthday party at your house, and enjoying dinners together. Time passes so quickly, though memories are so vivid. We grieve with you in your loss of your best friend and love, your partner of so many years. We are thinking of you at this time.

Too many memories to name! But, my favorite memory is Tom taking me to to the Mercantile Exchange where he had secured a summer position for me as a runner. I met him in the lobby at The Merc in 1981, “Now, Anne, there are going to be a lot of very aggressive men, don’t talk to them, don’t make eye contact, and let me know if anybody steps out of line.” I ended up marrying my husband who I met at the Merc that summer- I didn’t listen!! Love all the Horwich’s and being their next door neighbor changed my life!! He was the best!! So much love to all of you, especially you, Vicki ❤️

My friend from Chicago just notified me that Tom has passed away. I know this cannot be an easy time for you and my thoughts are with you. Moving away has put me in a remote category but I do remember Tom as a very kind caring person. Tom was one of the nicest guys I've ever met and a true class act! He was instrumental in helping me get my start in real estate. My amazing life since can be attributed back to him. Over the years, I enjoyed seeing him at the club and updating him on life/work. He was always supportive, had a quick joke, and was an over pleasure. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Tom was a friend from the day we met 63 years ago. He was special; a fine gentleman. And these last few years, he carried his burden with dignity and courage.

Very hard for me to write this; Tom meant so much to me. I always appreciated his wry sense of humor and genuine warmth. I was always fond of him , but really became a good friend through our wonderful golf trips which were so important to him and all the “chosen” people who were lucky enough to make the Horwich “cut”. I was the rookie when we went to Pinehurst and consequently received the special gift at our dinner on the final night. It was a Potty
Putter. He didn’t realize how appropriate it was for me.

I am so sorry to hear the news. Tom was truly one of the best people I ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was far and away one of the most influential people in my real estate career, dating back to my time at 100 West Monroe, 30 North Michigan and Rubloff. His class, integrity, generosity and thoughtfulness are completely unmatched and serve as a great example for all to follow. I will miss our frequent talks and lunches at Manny's. To the Horwich family, I am very sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I had the pleasure to meet Tom through The Hun School of Princeton.
We both served on the Board of Trustee's, as well as both being Alums. Tom was the class of 1959, while I was a few years later, 1975.
What we had in common was the love for our school and golf. Most common were guys golf trip stories and Tom's passion for the Evans scholarships.

Thinking of you, Vickie. I was your fellow «  non traditionally afed » student at Lake Forest College. We enjoyed some delightful dinners together at one another’s homes as we shared worries over exams & term papers while filling multiple other roles as wives, mothers and community volunteers.
