OBITUARY

Yuliya Sorokina

On January 23rd, 2023, Yuliya Sorokina passed away peacefully at AdventHealth Hinsdale hospital after battling a long-term illness. Yuliya was born on May 16th, 1929 in Tikhvin, Leningrad Oblast, near St. Petersburg, the birthplace of a famous composer Rimsky-Korsakov. She later graduated from St. Petersburg College of Engineering with a Bachelor Degree in Engineering. There she also played for her college volleyball team. She married her first love late Leonid Gurevich. They were married for 60 years and resided in Minsk, Belarus. They both worked at the Vavilov Mechanical Plant. Yuliya is survived by her daughter Anna Lobanova and her partner Anton Zirkelbach. She was a loving mother to the late Mark Gurevich. After she retired at the age of 55, she enjoyed gardening and spending time at her countryside cottage. The family immigrated to the United States in 1994 and settled in Wheeling, IL. She was a proud grandmother to Mariya Kara (Mikhail Chkolnik) and adored her 2 great grandchildren: Julia and Jacob Chkolnik. She was a sister of the late Gutya Machitidze and the late Sergej Sinkov. Fond aunt of Irina, Neli and Leonid. Anyone who knew her knew she was a sweet, caring and kind lady with a heart of gold. While retired, she enjoyed sewing custom clothing, Vologodsky and other styles of crochet and was an avid baker. She was famous among her family and friends for making the best Napoleon cake.

The service will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at 11 AM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 195 N Buffalo Grove Rd, (One Block North of Lake Cook Road) Buffalo Grove, IL 60089. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Lawns, 3100 Shermer Rd., Northbrook, IL. Information about luncheon following interment will be shared after the service.
