Funeral Details

Vera Burstyn, nee Goldschmied, age 83, has died peacefully after complications from leukemia. A Holocaust survivor from Hungary, after arriving penniless in Chicago in 1956 she created an incredible life for herself, full of hard work, intellectual curiosity, and love of family. An outspoken advocate for the oppressed and immigrants, she was a regular speaker for the Illinois Holocaust Museum, an active member of a writers’ group, a volunteer for organizations that helped the needy, a wonderful friend, and a ready dispenser of excellent advice. But nothing gave her more joy and satisfaction than her children and grandchildren. She was the beloved wife of Hyman Burstyn; the loving mother of Jim (Marcie) Burstyn, Linda Burstyn (Adam Taylor), Gerald (Rachel) Burstyn and Allan (Chaya) Gordon Burstyn ; and the proud grandmother of Shoshana (Chaim), Danielle, Talia, Theo, Chana, Shmuel, Orly, Asher, Gabriel, Toby, Yossi, and Bela.
