OBITUARY

Marla Ann Dorf nee Palmer passed away peacefully surrounded by family Saturday, September 11, 2021, after a long battle with cancer, she was 70 years old. Marla is survived by her husband of 37 years Steve, her son Sammy (Fiance Hannah Tyrrell) Dorf, daughter Jaclyn (Scott) Axonovitz , two grandchildren Cooper and Sloane Axonovitz and her sister Monica (Jeff) Biegel. It wouldn’t be right to say that Marla lost a battle to cancer, because she never stopped fighting. No matter the day, the diagnosis…her spirit never wavered. She was the definition of strength and resilience; there was no quit in Marla. Everyone that knows Marla knows that she was the most giving, positive, and selfless person around.  Marla lived her life for others & devoted her love to her family.  From her home in Deerfield, IL where her and her husband Steve raised two beautiful children. To the shores of Lake Michigan where Marla and Steve built their “heaven on earth” in Michiana, Michigan, “Happy Marla” was the queen of this “country” town.  A Saturday morning walk down the lake road was filled with conversations with life long friends.  “Happy Marla” loved nothing more than engraining her two grandchildren into the Michiana community. In the kitchen Marla came to life.  From her pizza, to rice casserole &  her famous sausage & peppers, all her special dishes were known to anyone who was lucky enough to grace her kitchen.  But don’t let the sauce stains on the apron fool you.  Always dressed to the nines with her hair, nails, and makeup done impeccably, Marla was a lady through and through. Service Tuesday 1PM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd. (at Niles Center Road) Skokie. Interment Westlawn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Keshet, 610 Academy Drive, Northbrook, Illinois 60062, www.keshet.org. To attend the funeral live stream, please visit our website. Words cannot describe the way Marla lit up a room. She was "the" Hockey Mom for the Deerfield hockey guys, and I will always remember her laughter and smile. She always wanted to know about hockey, and always wanted to know if I was behaving. She will be missed. Condolences to all.

Marla was overflowing joy. A smile that never stopped. A warrior against health challenges. An inspiration on being a wife, mom, gramma and hostess. I wish I could put my arms around Steve and just hug. I will be streaming funeral in California. Sending love....Sandi

Having been close friends with Marla and Steve for 40 years brings back lots of memories. A sailing trip to the British Virgin islands,a snow ski trip to colorado and many other adventures at our homes at the beach in the village of Michiana Michigan. Marla could lift your spirits and make you smile on days you were down. Marla loved kids and was an administrator for the Day Camp and womens club in the village. She has left us to soon. .She still had good work to do. She will be missed by all who knew her.

I will always remember the first time I saw Marla. She was modeling for the fashion show at the annual Michiana Women's Club luncheon. She was wearing a beautiful red dress and was accompanied by the song "Lady in Red." It was shortly after having given birth, which her figure did not show, and she was beautiful and radiant.

I hope all your memories of Marla will be as beautiful.

My Daughter Andi sent this to me when I sent her the obituary. I thought it would be nice to post here.

That was a very nice read about her...and very true. Whenever she was around you knew there was something nearby to be excited to eat or smile from.... I can't put my finger on what it was about her that made her so special but ...a case could be made for the irony of how "small things make big impacts". It's too soon to say it but her life and her height were too short....
Like they said...cancer didn't win bc her good energy and recipes will live on bringing joy all around. Long live Marla Dorf. ❤️❤️

When Marla came in the room, everyone turned to look. She was the life of the party. Had an energy and excitement that was contagious. Marla never showed up empty handed. Always bearing Snicker Doodles or Mandel Bread. Taught me and my girls how to make deep dish pizza. I still have the recipe. In fact, Andi said we should get together soon and make it together in her honor. What a great idea. We will always miss you Marla.

We are terribly saddened by Marla's passing, yet we have such warm memories of her. She was so kind, gentle, loving and strong. She brightened any and every place she went to, and those who knew her were fortunate, indeed be able to enjoy her amazing spirit. It's impossible to picture Marla without a smile on her beautiful face because that is how she looked at the world. Like so very many others, we shall miss her...a lot.
