OBITUARY

Fern F. Steinfeld, 99

Beloved wife of the late Manfred Steinfeld for nearly 70 years. Loving mother of Paul (Sara Sisson) Steinfeld and Jill (Timothy Cunniff) Steinfeld and the late Michael (Rosibel) Steinfeld. Proud grandmother of Adam, Joshua, Tara, Ryan, Courtney, Chase, Caroline, Kevin, Jason, Bradley and the late Danny. Cherished great grandmother of Maggie. Devoted daughter of the late Max and the late Esther Goldman. Dear sister of the late Allan (the late Ruth) Goldman. Fond aunt of Darlene (William) Mcabee and the late Cheralyn (Dennis) Odelius. Born in 1924 in Elgin, Illinois, Fern was a 1945 graduate of Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism. After a brief career as a newspaper reporter, Fern met the love of her life and raised her family in Skokie in the Evanston school system where she was active in the PTA. A force of nature with fiery red hair, Fern was extremely charitable and when she wasn't serving on Boards, she loved golf, crossword puzzles and card playing and was also an avid reader. Always stylish, Fern was a world traveler and a friend to all. The interment service is private. Thirty years ago I was fortunate enough to come to Knoxville, TN. Soon after my arrival I had the opportunity to meet Manny and Fern Steinfeld, who had a long-time relationship with Knoxville and the University of Tennessee. Fern and Manny became generous and continuous supporters of the Judaic Studies Program that is named for them. I will always be grateful to Fern for her kindness and her wonderful hospitality, as well as her lively interest in and keen observations on our programming, students, and research. My deepest condolences to the family. I shall miss Fern very much and remember her with love and gratitude. May Fern's memory be for a blessing.

Dear Family and Friends of Fern,
I found that Fern was indeed a force of nature, even though I did not meet her and Manny until 2012 when one might think they would be moving at a slower pace. I met her because I was the new Dean at the University of Tennessee, where they generously supported the growth and improvement of our small Judaic Studies Program. This support grew from the years of support they provided to employees of their furniture plant in East Tennessee. They supported many of the employees children attending college, and that included those coming to UTK. Eventually, Manny (and then Fern) met Dr. Gilya Schmidt, the director of the program, and herself a force of nature. Together, Gilya, Manny and Fern made a wonderful program come to life on our campus and it has supported our Jewish students as well as students who simply want to know more about Judaism. Every time I visited with Fern and Manny, I found them delightfully knowledgeable and eager to know what was happening on our campus, and to share details about Chicago (where I had been a student). I am so sorry that Fern is gone from this earth, she made a huge difference in so many lives and she will live on in our memories as a force for goodness.
