I remember so many big smiles and laughs and hope you do too. An amazing intellect and very generous in sharing it with others. I have such fond memories of dining at your house and Al telling stories. Thinking of you all and sending lots of hugs and love.

We came to know Al only in recent years. He was everyone's father, grandfather and sage. Listening to him lead a service or respond to a question of halacha always made me feel a strong connection our Peoplehood. Whenever I could, I would sit just on the other side of the mechitzah from him. I knew if I became a bit lost, I could always ask Al. While he could at times be impatient, he never was with me or Andrew and answered our questions thoughtfully and with humor. We will both miss him. Baruch Dayan Ha Emet. May his memory be for a blessing.

dearest paula--the excruciating wait is over but the pain and absence will linger. we are so saddened by your (our) loss and find it unbelievable that Al has gone to be with the only Higher Authority he deserves to be with. i barely remember our time together in shul as preteens but our reconnection at lake shore was remarkable. words are inadequate to measure the degree of Avraham b' Chana Rachel's superb level of knowledge and the pleasure he had in imparting that expertise to whomever sought his help. i wanted so to be there with you today but, as u know, i am otherwise consummed with challenges.

May the Almighty grant Al the highest place in Gan Eden and may He
reward u with the respite you've earned. be strong Paula. CHAZAK,CHAZAK V'NISCHAZEIK

Arnie and I will miss Al very much. His memories, that he was always so delighted to share, his insights, his brilliance, his laugh, his smile and his pastrami recommendations. We looked forward to every opportunity to see him and will miss him dearly.
We know his memory and memories will live on through his wonderful family. Our love to you all.

"Ask Medansky!" was the first time I heard about your dad. My mom and dad were friendly with him and your mom in Great Neck at the Great Neck Synagogue, where Al already had a reputation for brilliance - and Slivovitz! Following them to Highland Park, we got to know them as friends and neighbors. It was also a privilege (an intimidating one, to be sure) to "oppose" Al in a "Hummantash/Latke" debate at NSS Beth El. Your dad was an exceptional human - "brilliant" doesn't do him justice. He made our lives - and everyone else's he knew - better, funnier and much, much smarter. May his memory be for a blessing.

So many warm fond memories of your father, right from the time you moved to HP and became our across the ravine neighbors.

Walking back from shul on Sheridan Road (with the inevitable culminating parrot joke), kibitzing up on the bimah (where we always tried to throw each other off by injecting preemptive tropes), Shabbat study groups, on the tennis court, or at his office at the U of C. (he was instrumental in securing a scholarship for me when I did grad work there--and one time he showed me an exam where a student of his got a 2. "A 2! Not zero, but a 2! He had to work for this!") were all unforgettable experiences.

Conversations with your father inevitably involved one of three items and often all three: 1) Causing our brains to work at unaccustomed warp speed (especially as a pre-adolescent); 2) Our busting out in hysterics; 3) An ultrasophisticated yet quintessentially irreverent zinger about something Jewish, often causing 2).

And yes, I remember that early "computer"!

Yehi zichro baruch.
