OBITUARY
Jerome "Jerry" Emanuel Dinell, passed away peacefully in Chicago on Sunday, June 9, 2024 at the grand old age of 97. Jerry, as literally everyone except his wife called him, was a proud, lifelong South Sider. He grew up all around the numbered streets, and after his service during Wwil he was a laborer then salesman and eventually the owner of Steel City Furniture at 91st and Commercial, where he spent 5-6 days a week for over 60 years. He and his late wife Shirlee Dinell nee Hornstein settled in Park Forest, IL, where they raised their family. He was the loving father of Bonnie Dinell-Dimond, Judi Dinell and the late Terri (Dale, he's still alive) Vanderwerff, the respected and adored grandfather of Nicolas (Keely) Dimond, Aaron (Jeanne) Vanderwerff, Rachel Vanderwerff and Marc (Elana) Sapoznik. And he was perhaps the most delighted to be the great-grandfather of Tova Vanderwerff, she was truly the light in his life. Given his difficult childhood and early family life he was so proud to have helped build a family that endured and hung together and spanned 4 generations. Jerry was a Freemason, a member of the South Chicago Chamber of Commerce, and a member at Temple Anshe Sholom. He was stubborn and fair. He was kind and gentle. He was quiet and funny. He loved theater and opera and the White Sox. He was crazy about his wife. He worked hard and led by example. Funeral is Friday, June 14, 2024 at 11 AM at Temple Beit Shalom, 10001 Columbia Ave., Munster, IN 46321. Interment after at Beverly Cemetery, 12000 South Kedzie Avenue, Blue Island, Illinois 60406. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Epilepsy Foundation, or Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.
