OBITUARY

Rabbi Herbert Bronstein, a native of Cincinnati Ohio, served for over a quarter of the century as Senior Rabbi and later as Senior Scholar at North Congregation Israel of Glencoe, Il. He was known for his erudition, work with youth, warm pastoral style, and abiding love of Jewish liturgy, ritual, and study. His rabbinate combined congregational leadership alongside scholarly achievements and active participation in American public life, especially as an advocate for many social justice efforts in the greater Chicago community. He is a former president of the Chicago Board of Rabbis.

He was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, receiving his BA in 1952 and MA in 1954. After attending the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, he was ordained rabbi in 1957. Scholarship was a lifelong endeavor. He engaged in many years of graduate study in History of Religions at the University of Chicago and at Oxford University. He was named a Life Member of the Visiting Committee of the University of Chicago Divinity School. A prolific writer, Rabbi Bronstein contributed to journals as wide-ranging as the Journal of Religion, the American Jewish Archives, the Journal of Reform Judaism and the Shakespeare Quarterly. He is best known for editing the 1974 Reform movement Passover Haggadah, which was translated into many languages. Rabbi Bronstein served as Chair of the Central Conference of American Rabbi’s (CCAR) Liturgy Committee and was also a member of the Executive Board. A renowned teacher, he was a lecturer at numerous colleges and universities, and at the Wexner Heritage Foundation. He served as an adjunct professor of World Religions at Lake Forest College for more than a decade.

Prior to his many years in the Chicago area, Rabbi Bronstein served for 15 years at Temple Brith Kodesh in Rochester, New York. Beyond the synagogue, his involvement in the Rochester community included service on the board of the Jewish Community Relations Council, as a civilian member of the Police Advisory Board and on the Metropolitan Housing Committee of Rochester.

A life-long activist for civil rights, anti-war efforts, and American democracy, Rabbi Bronstein was also deeply involved in furthering interfaith relations. He served on the Boards of the Chicago Council of Religious Leaders and the Parliament of World Religions, also pioneering and fostering Jewish -Muslim dialogue.

Rabbi Bronstein was a great lover of the arts and humanities, especially music, literature, and all things Shakespeare. He revered the natural world and was an avid skier.

Rabbi Bronstein was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. His 62-year marriage to Tamar (Blumenfield) Bronstein (prior to her death in 2016) was at the center of his life. Together they dedicated themselves to Jewish community and Jewish practice and to American democracy. Rabbi Bronstein is survived by his children Rabbi Deborah Ruth Bronstein, Miriam Bronstein, MSW, Rabbi Dr. Daniel M. Bronstein, daughter-in- Law Sari Fensterheim, and grandchildren Lev S.R. Kling-Bronstein and Samuel E. Fensterheim-Bronstein.

Herbert Bronstein was my rabbi and mentor from the age of 11, when my family and I moved to Rochester, where he worked, then. His warmth, sensitivity and willingness to go off the beaten path whenever worth it allowed him to provide my peers and me with a compassionate, forward thinking, responsible Judaism that encouraged creativity and Tilkun Olam. He was my de facto family therapist when things got difficult at home. Our friendship grew and we never stopped. I spent time with him and his lovely daughters toward the end of his life on lovely Zoom calls. Even as he sat in his wheelchair, ravaged by age and the challenges and difficulties of spiritually based living, I was in the presence of greatness and knew it in every moment. He is with God and I’m glad about that.

A bright light in my many years at NSCI. Has dimmed. I knew Herb Bronstein for many years. I worked hard for the temple and gained as much as I gave. His efforts at nsci will always be remembered.

Rabbi Bronstein married us in 1985 and in 2017, we recorded him as he explained the reason we break the glass during the wedding ceremony. We used this video recording at our children's rehearsal dinner.

He has touched our lives for lifecycle events that we will hold dear in our hearts and memories forever.

Thank you Rabbi for being there for us. May you
Rest in Peace. Your life has been a blessing to us and so many.

Herbie&Tamar & I. We’re close friends from 1942 when Herb & I shared a tent we were tentmates at Habonim Kvutsat Kinneret in Chelsea Mich. Later. In life we visited each other in Detroit & Cincinati! & Chicago. We visited Herb & Tamar in Chicago & would meet him in Palm Springs later in life when he would come to present seminars. I considered him a close & great friend & he will be sorely missed!

Dear Bronstein Family: I became aware of the rabbi's death from reading the obituaries in today's Tribune, so I regret missing the service, and the eulogies, and being able to extend my condolences in person. As you know, he was one of the major rabbinic figures in the Chicago area for decades; his vocal support for organizations committed to an Israeli- Palestinian peace was very important in legitimating our advocacy work in the Chicago Jewish community. Many years ago, we collaborated on a series of seminars at the temple (sponsored by the Mansfield Institute for Social Justice at Roosevelt University) on the future of American Jewry. His knowledge and wisdom and good humor were much in evidence.

I knew he had moved to the Mather when Mrs. Bronstein was failing and my most recent attempt to reach him there did not succeed. I was concerned. I hope his passing was not difficult. As we say, his memory shall be for a blessing.

Sending you all so much love. Sorry to have never known him, and understand now a bit - what a blessing he must have been as a father, rabbi, husband, friend. A great loss but so much to bring forward with you as you move through the days and months ahead.

I'm very sad to hear about Rabbi Bronstein's passing. I knew him when I was working at NSCI. I also got to know Tamar very well when she was the music instructor at the NSCI. He was such a warm spirited man and very kind. One year they invited me over for Passover at their home. I'm glad I went. Rest in Peace Rabbi Bronstein. May your memory be for a blessing.

My wife, Marilyn, joins me in sincere and heartfelt condolences to all of the family members of Rabbi Herbert Bronstein who at one time played a significant role in my life. This happened in Rochester, NY when I was an undergraduate student at the University of Rochester, and he was a rabbi at Temple B'rith Kodesh where I had grown up and my family belonged. During this period, I was relatively close to your mother to your mother and father and their positive influence, example and support were among the principal influences eventually leading me to enter HUC in Cincinnati from which I was ordained in 1965. We kept in touch for a number of years.

Your father encouraged me to take positions first as a counselor at the Rochester Jewish community overnight camp on Seneca Lake and immediately thereafter as a sixth grade religious schoolteacher at Temple B'rith Kodesh. Both of these extremely positive experiences led to my eventual decision to become a rabbi and getting to know the man I consider one of my personal mentors on a very high pedestal.

"May G-d comfort you among the mourners of our people . . . "
Sincerely,
Marilyn and Tom Liebschutz
