OBITUARY

Deborah “Debby” J. Zirin (nee Fried), 85

Beloved wife of 64 years to Burton Zirin; devoted mother to David (Tracy) and Jon (Lisa) and exceptional grandmother to Alex (Katherine), Olivia, Josh and Lily. Debby was born in New York and raised by her loving parents Ruth and Robert Fried in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She was an amazing big sister to Sandra (Sandy) Goldstein. Debby was a beloved educator her entire life, and spent many years in the Highland Park school system, most recently teaching first grade at Wayne Thomas. She received her Bachelor's degree from Case Western Reserve and her Master's from National Louis University. Debby was the “teacher to get” at Wayne Thomas and was loved equally by her students and their parents. Her “Friday hugs” were legendary and her students would return well into their 5th grade year for one more hug on Friday afternoons. After Debby retired, she worked to help train the next generation of teachers with National Louis University. Debby was a devoted grandmother to her 4 lucky grandchildren. They loved her family traditions, especially the baking of Hanukkah cookies every year and Grandma Debby never minded when the sprinkles ended up all over the house! She and Burt never missed their games, performances, or other special events. She was so proud to be their grandma.
Funeral services will be on Monday, July 7, 10:30 AM at Makom Solel Lakeside Congregation, 1301 Clavey Rd., Highland Park. Interment will be at Shalom Memorial Park.
