OBITUARY

Jennifer “Jennie” Shore Gutmann

Jennifer “Jennie” Shore Gutmann of Long Grove, IL, beloved wife, daughter, mother, and grandmother, died on August 1, 2025 at 61 after a long struggle with ovarian cancer. Born November 1, 1963 at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL to Betsy Shore and the late Daniel Shore, Jennie grew up in Niles, IL with her brother, Doug Shore, and graduated from Maine North High School in Des Plaines, IL in 1981. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Indiana University in 1985 and a master’s degree in operations management and information systems from Northern Illinois University in 1991. Jennie had a successful career as a senior systems analyst for Discover Financial Services. After working at Discover for many years, Jennie left to become a full-time mother to her three children.

Jennie met her future husband Cliff Gutmann in 1988, and they married in 1990. Jennie was a devoted mother to her three children: Elisha (1993), Valerie (1996), and Reuben (1999). Jennie and Cliff raised their family in Chicago’s northwest suburbs and were active in the community. They hosted many birthday and holiday gatherings, including their annual Halloween spaghetti dinner, a longtime family tradition. Jennie served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader for both her daughters and as Cub Scout Cubmaster for her son. She loved baking and playing the piano and maintained beautiful and productive flower and vegetable gardens. In her later years, Jennie and Cliff became avid square dancers and were members of multiple clubs throughout the Chicagoland area. Jennie enjoyed listening to non-fiction audio books and was happiest when talking with family or playing with her grandkids. She had infinite patience for those she loved. Her bright smile and uplifting spirit will be sorely missed.

Jennie is survived by her husband of 34 years, Clifford Gutmann, daughters Elisha (Aaron) Friedman and Valerie Gutmann, son Reuben Gutmann, grandchildren Zev, Rose, Benji, and Talia Friedman, mother Betsy Shore, and brother Doug Shore (Sarah Nolan). She was predeceased by her father, Daniel Shore.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, 10:30AM at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 195 N. Buffalo Grove Road (one block north of Lake Cook Road), Buffalo Grove, IL 60089. All who knew Jennie or her family are welcome. To attend the memorial service live stream, please visit bit.ly/JenniferGutmann. I had the opportunity to meet Jennie one time when she came to the senior center during a dance several months ago. We chatted quite a while and she impressed me as being very kind and sweet. I would have enjoyed dancing with her but never had the chance to do so. I’m so sorry to learn of her passing and wish to express my deepest condolences to her family.
