My relationship with Shirley was especially meaningful during her illness. When I visited her for the first time, she told me about the recent wedding of her son, how very happy everyone was and then - the news of her illness. I tried to convey words of Chizuk, but ultimately it was she who gave Chizuk: Whatever Hashem wants and plans with me, I'll follow. This is in essence what she expressed. She aligned her will to Hashem's will. No argument. No rebellious feelings. Total submission. This lesson of Emuno from a person who was being challenged with a life and death test. I felt so small, so very very small. How much more do I/we need to accept Hashem's Hashgocho; the easy and good and the not so easy and not so good ones...
Shirley showed and expressed maximum gratitude for every visit. Personally I felt I owe her gratitude - for teaching and showing me how to live with such Emuno, but it was she who always thanked me so heartily for coming.
Shirley was an inspiration for all who knew her. Her very being exuded purity and Tzidkus. By continuing this legacy, the loss is hopefully somewhat lessened. Neverthe less, she is sorely missed by all.
