OBITUARY

Richard L. Brauer, age 73, passed away suddenly on June 14 in Chicago, IL, with his daughter Beth (Brauer-Delaney) by his side. After enduring many health problems after a stroke in 2007, he finally passed due to respiratory failure and heart disease.

Born to (late) Morris and (late) Eva Brauer, Richard was raised with his brothers (late) Michael and Terry in East Chicago, IN. He earned academic college scholarships from the University of Chicago and the University of Rochester, which also awarded him the Bausch & Lomb Science Award for his outstanding academic achievements in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Richard was a graduate of The University of Chicago and Loyola Law School. He drove a taxi and worked in a factory to pay for his expenses while in college and law school. He practiced appellate and litigation law for many years and found gratification in stridently representing plaintiffs in the pursuit of justice.

To say Richard was an avid reader is an understatement. He would devour a multitude of topics and interests by incessantly reading, questioning, and thinking. From finite numbers, to biochemistry, to Aristotle, to Thomas Hardy, to Cormac McCarthy - Richard was a lifelong student in his pursuit of knowledge. He was also a classical music enthusiast and audio equipment hobbyist. He loved computers and researching diverse subjects of interest to him online. He followed current events and politics with regularity and enjoyed discussing these topics whenever given a window of opportunity.

He took the most pride in his daughter Beth, especially for how she grew and evolved into a fine young woman following the loss of her mother, Susan (Korngoot), while still a child. Richard’s most cherished moments in life were those spent with Beth, his grandchildren Seren and Brynn, and son-in-law, Adam Delaney.

Graveside service will be held on Monday, June 19, at 1:30PM. at Waldheim Cemetery, Forest Park, Roosevelt & Des Plaines Ave., Gate 1). In lieu of flowers, donation memorials may be made in Richard’s name to The Ark, 6450 N. California Avenue, Chicago, IL 60645
