OBITUARY

Frances G. Tabin, age 99, died Monday, the 18th of September following a short illness in her apartment in North Shore Place, an elder facility in Northbrook.

Frances was born and raised in Chicago, IL where she met her husband, Seymour who predeceased her by about 2.5 years. They had been dating since they were sixteen and were married a total of 75 years. When her husband was in the Navy and away during WWII, she lived in California with her parents and what was to be her only child, Lee. After the war they moved back to Chicago and then four years later to Highland Park, IL where they lived in the same house for 66 years. Frances was an exceptional student, having been valedictorian of her class at Senn High School, and in addition Phi Beta Kappa in English lit at the University of Chicago where she also got her M.A. with honors in English.

She was a totally devoted wife and mother who taught for some years, and also enjoyed travel, book groups, weaving class, volunteering at Solel, and above all reading. She read at such a fast pace, that when she was young a film of her eyes moving was attempted. However she was above all a grandparent to three children who are now well into their adulthood. They are very different people and required different kinds of care and interaction and she did it perfectly, probably because she thought each one was perfect, albeit in his or her own way.

She will be missed by many, including her son Lee (Janet); grandchildren Jennifer (Thad Q) Bartlett, William and John and by her great-grandchildren Quincy and Silas Bartlett.

Funeral service, Tuesday, September 26 at 1pm at Congregation Solel, 1301 Clavey Road, Highland Park, IL 60035. Private Interment. My first memories of my dear cousin Frances date to the two days she took care of me while my dad was at work and mother was delivering my younger sister -- I hope I wasn't a "terrible two". I see now that Frances was celebrating her own thirtieth birthday! My wife Judy and I saw her several times in the past decade during brief visits to Chicago. She was a perfect, gracious hostess and a fascinating conversationalist, avid for news, full of interesting observations, but most important, a kind person devoted to her dear family.
