I am the retired rabbi from Temple Israel in Springfield. I knew Morey from when I was officiating at funerals in Peoria. I would encounter him in later years when I attended shacharit at Loop Synagogue. I always enjoyed talking with him. I extend my condolences to the family. May his memory endure as a blessing.

During most of 2003, I was saying Kaddish daily for my father. One day during that time, I was traveling to Chicago with Sarita (my wife of blessed memory) after a court case near Springfield. I needed a place to say Kaddish, so I called Morey, who was in Peoria at at that time. Morey made a successful effort to get together a minyan together. But he wouldn't let us get back on the road without dinner; Morey had Sarita and me over to his home in Peoria, where he made us dinner and send us back on our way home.

I lived in Peoria for many years. I got to know Morey when we both attended evening minyon. He usually walked there even when it was well below freezing, but he let me drive him home afterward. He was a brilliant man who was also very practical…a rare combination in my experience. When Morey said something it was always worth listening to. It was a privilege to have known him and to have had him as a friend. He will definitely be missed.
