OBITUARY

Mark Greenberg M.D., a highly respected and pioneering radiologist as well as a generous philanthropist, 72, died of complications due to sarcoma in his home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on December 4, 2022.

Dr. Greenberg is survived by his wife (Dr. Yvonne Jurcik), his brother (Dr. Brent Greenberg) and his nephew (Adam Greenberg), and the thousands of patients he cared for over the 46 years he was in practice.

Dr. Greenberg was a native of Chicago, where with his father and brother he co-founded and co-directed Greenberg Radiology Institute (GRI), the foremost private radiology clinic in the Chicago area. He relocated to the Palm Beach Gardens area in 1996 and opened Advanced Imaging of Stuart, one of the first out-patient imaging centers on Florida’s Gold Coast. Over the ensuing years, Dr. Greenberg provided radiology services through his own practice and as a private consultant through MG Reading Services. He earned a reputation as an astute and meticulous diagnostician.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Greenberg was an avid golfer, travel enthusiast, amateur movie critic and patron of the opera. He also enjoyed dabbling in finances and followed the markets closely.

“More than anything, Mark loved golf,” shared Dr. Russell Bourne, a colleague and close friend who golfed with him weekly. “He was a great golf partner. He had the most agreeable and kind way of offering suggestions.”

Dr. Greenberg graduated from New Trier West High School (Winnetka, Illinois) in 1968. He went on to attend UCLA and earned a B.S. in 1972. He completed his M.D. from Northwestern University in 1976 and his residency in diagnostic radiology at UCLA. Dr. Greenberg served on the faculty of University of Chicago. In 1992, he returned to academia to complete his MBA at Kellogg School of Management. Dr. Greenberg was the editor of Essentials of Body Computed Tomography, a textbook published in 1983.

“Mark approached life as a student. He was perpetually learning and raised the bar wherever he practiced,” observed his brother and colleague Dr. Brent M. Greenberg.

One of his favorite weekend rituals was watching the Willie Geist show where the host pays tribute each week to “A Life Well Lived.” Dr. Greenberg will be remembered by his cherished family and friends for living such a life.

Services will be held at IJ Morris funeral home in Palm Beach Gardens at 2:30 PM on December 7, 2022. There will be a burial in Chicago on December 12, 2022, 11 AM CST at Shalom Memorial in Arlington Heights.

Dr. Greenberg was a passionate supporter of Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF), in particular its scholarship program. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in his honor. Hello, I had the pleasure of working with Dr Greenberg. I worked as an MRI technologist at FOS and worked closely with him from 2003-21. He was such a pleasure to work with. He loved to teach and help my co-worker and I to grow in our knowledge and perfecting our scanning skills. Even though he was off site of our office, we spent a good amount of time on the phone with challenging cases. He was so helpful in our transition to a Radiology group when he retired. I miss the one on one help he would give, teaching us. Dr. Greenberg holds a special place in my heart. My condolences for your loss.

Dear Dr. J.
Please accept out deepest sympathies on the passing of your beloved husband. I remember you and I were talking and you asked if I could help you to make something to take to your in laws home for the holidays. So I got you a Jewish Cookbook and various kinds of Manischewitz Cakes to make for Passover.

May his memory be for a blessing.

Brent, I am so shocked and saddened by the news of Mark’s passing. The world has lost a true scholar and a gentleman. I hope that the memories of the good person he was will ease the pain of his absence.
