OBITUARY

Geraldine Salzman nee Dintzis age 95.

Dear mother of David Salzman, Richard Salzman, Steven (Lisa) Salzman, Judy Salzman, and Beth Salzman Gordon. Adoring grandmother of Allison (Oscar Carvajal) Salzman, Laura (Sean O’Connor) Gordon, Daniel (Melissa) Salzman, and Ariana (Chris Spencer) Matthews-Salzman. Cherished sister of the late Eleanor (the late Erwin) Guttman. Beloved aunt of Lanni (the late George Gross) Guttman, Denni (Bill) Cuthbert, Lita Guttman. Great-aunt to Lara and Donielle. Loving friend, mother, aunt and cousin to many. Her home was always open to all. Geraldine grew up on the west side of Chicago and attended the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. She worked at Tech Institute of Northwestern University and enjoyed flying planes with the Northwestern Flying Club. In the 1970s she was a pioneer of biofeedback clinical practice at BRAIN labs in Arlington Heights. She was an active community member of JRC Evanston, becoming a Bat Mitzvah at 75 years young! Gerry devoted herself to the practice of Tai Chi for over 40 years and enjoyed skiing, traveling, reading, gardening, studying languages and listening to classical music. Determined to live life to the fullest, she overcame the odds many times over. She was a champion of the underdog and inspired others with her strength. A lover of cats, dogs, flowers and chocolate, Geraldine’s greatest passion was connecting with people, sharing stories and learning about the many wonders of the world. To keep everyone safe and healthy, the interment service will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave, Montgomery, AL 36104 www.splcenter.org and to The Foundation for Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation PO Box 180018, Chicago, IL 60618 www.fhsr.org. I met Gerry through Richard here in Richmond a number of years ago and we
connected immediately over our shared love of family and Classical Music... I have often wished that she lived next door for I'm sure we would have enjoyed
raising a bit of mischief together. The Heavenly Choir is singing a bit sweeter now that they know Gerry is attending. Peace to you all...Carol Adams

As a childhood friend of her son Steve, Mrs. Salzman (Geraldine) and I started out in different generations but ended up unified in our love of learning and curiosity about the world. I remember back in the '70s dropping by the house on Monticello during a college break and her patiently explaining the exciting work she was doing in what was then the new area of biofeedback.
It is as one grows up and starts to see adult figures for the people they really are that I realized that she wasn't just a "cool mom" but a really cool human being. Flash forward to a few years ago, some 40-plus years later and I'm sitting in a physiology of psychology class--I'm the old guy now--and the professor discusses these same biofeedback principles that have since been verified through research.
That lecture took me back to that day in Skokie and confirmed what she told me so many years ago. I remembered her vision and excitement, and after class, I went home and checked online to confirm that, yes, she was still with us and living in that old Monticello house after all these years.

Gerry was my friend for 43 years, we met when her son Rick and I shared an apartment in Evanston back in the late 70's. I was 23, in my first year in grad school and looking back I feel so lucky to have been included in the many family gatherings over the years. As anyone that met Gerry knows she was unique, young at heart and always interested in learning something new. The last time we met was 2 years ago, she was frail, not moving so quickly, but she was as sharp as ever. I have many memories of her from the first time we met to the last time I saw here. She was my friend, and I will miss her.

"I want to be like her when I grow up" is an expression I suspect many who knew her felt about Geri. Partly because of her wisdom, kindness and grace; and partly because she never lost touch with her playful inner child. I always felt welcomed by Geri. She seemed to instinctively know how to love unconditionally. And thankfully, she took in strays! Geri was always comfortable in her own skin, which made those around her comfortable too. She and her family welcomed me, my partners, my son, my dog.........
When I was a clueless college buddy of Rick's, she invited a flock of us knuckleheads to stay in her magical basement.... to attend her daughters' bat mitzvahs! When my own mom was failing, Geri visited with her at the hospital a number of times. I will never forget that kindness. When I was single parenting Ben, as a toddler, Geri babysat for him so I could go on a necessary out of town business trip.
What a gift she was. I am humbled to have known her.
