I am so sorry to hear of Joel's passing. I am sitting here in complete shock and with a loss for words. I am remembering back to a time long ago sitting at Nana Sarahs dining room table when Nana asked me to recite the prayers after dinner since I was the oldest. I managed to get through them in a somewhat adequate manner with a few stumbles along the way. Joel who could recite them from memory never corrected my mistakes but congratulated me on a job well done. I have some fond memories of both Uncle Mel and Cousin Joel that will always be with me.

I was honored to call Joel my partner and my friend for many years while he was a partner at McDermott Will & Emery. He was the consummate lawyer -- smart, fair, hard working, dedicated to his clients and his craft. Joel came to McDermott in mid-career and we were so lucky that he did. He developed a devoted following among young lawyers who knew a great mentor when they saw one. He taught and modeled excellence every day.

On a personal level, Joel always greeted me with a smile and we had many chats about bicycling, our families, and the law. He was a true friend, a very good man, and he will be missed by all who had the good fortune to work with him.

May his memory be for a blessing.
