OBITUARY

We are heartbroken to share that our dear Eliahu “Allie” Hershel Karbal, 34, of Chicago, IL passed away. Allie was born on May 29, 1988, and died on December 3rd of liver failure, after an 8-year struggle following a liver transplant. Allie is survived by his mother Jan Zausmer (Rabbi Michael Schorin), father Bruce Karbal (Mary), and sweet sweet brothers Aryeh Karbal (Naomi Kurtz), Shlomo Karbal (Dashiell Bark-Huss), and Mickey Karbal. Allie was a resourceful entrepreneur in the luxury industry, working for years beside the Miller brothers. He knew something about pretty much everything; from science to the stock market, fitches to billiards, and IT to art, making him a great friend to talk with. Allie had a brilliant mind and an innate understanding of how things worked; he was the go-to brother to fix everything and anything when it broke. He loved fishing and camping at Apple Canyon and was always the first one to catch a frog. Allie had a wicked smart sense of humor and innately knew how to find a way into your heart. He would beat you in poker one minute, and then ask for a sandwich to clear the debt. Allie will be sorely missed by all of us who were lucky enough to know him. May his memory be for a blessing. Services were held. Interment at Sunset Memorial Lawns in Northbrook. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to JUF Chicago - who provided camp scholarships to the boys. Allie was always such a kind hearted person. I have many fond memories growing up in the same schools. He was always the life of the party and unafraid to be himself. I am sure he will be sorely miss by his family and friends. May his memory be a blessing.

As a friend of his I could say so many positive things about his character, heart, selflessness. Allie always made sue I was comfortable and content at all times when we would hang out together. We could sit in a living room for hours and just talk all day, like we knew each other forever. He made me feel loved and cared for in this friendship. There’s only one Allie, and I’ve will always be apart of me, because some of my traits to this day are from the love and care he showed me. This time it’s not I love you I’ll see you soon. This time it’s goodbye.

Allie was incredibly charismatic individual and really was a tzaddik in his own special way. He was a unique and complex person who dealt with life with a sense of levity and fearlessness.

To the Karbal family, the Miller, the extended family, and especially to Jan and Bruce, I am so sorry for your loss.

Allie was wonderfully mischievous, pleasantly insightful, and a radical nonconformist. He was in my humble opinion, of the sort who, because he was not giving a choice in the matter of being born and without anyone asking him for permission. He chose to live and learn from this universe on his own terms, and shared his life with us as he saw fit. He did so with love, and humor, and strength. He would never bend for anyone, ever, when he knew for himself what it was he needed and he did his best to do so amicably and regardless of perceptions of those who could not understand his decisions in life. In my opinion he made excellent choices and he lived a magnificent life. I am proud of him and proud to have known him. It is said that in their final moments people show you who they really are before they die. I hope I am as strong and brave and as kind as Allie was when it will be my time to go. All my love to you all.
