OBITUARY

Samuel B. Garber, 91, loving husband of Marietta Bratta-Garber, devoted father of Debbie (Paul) and Diane, cherished grandfather of Jordan (Abby), Max (Caylin), and Marisa, and caring great-grandfather of Grayson, Theo, and Louis. Special friend to Caryn Garber, and a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents Yetta and Morris Garber, brothers Harry (Betty) and George (Rita) Garber, and sister Lillian (Emanuel) Feder.

Born and raised in Chicago, the youngest of the four siblings, Sam had a passion for life, service, and education. Sam earned his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Illinois and his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He began his corporate career as Legal Counsel for Walgreens and served as General Counsel for Evans Furs and General Growth Properties. In later years Sam enjoyed his tenure as an Adjunct Professor of Business Law at the University of Chicago and DePaul University, and his position as a Judicial Expert Witness on the SEC Arbitration Board. Above all, Sam loved his family, friends, colleagues, the law, his active life, travel, the arts, Broadway musicals, Chicago sports, and more. He and Marietta cruised the world 23 times and shared countless trips to destinations near and far. When not traveling, Sam could be found bowling, ice skating, rooting for the Cubs, cheering on his grandchildren, picnicking at Ravinia, mentoring his students, and lending a helping hand or words of encouragement wherever needed. Sam truly loved his family and his life, and all who were lucky enough to know him benefited greatly from his unwavering support, important life lessons, and grace. He will be missed.

Special thanks to his compassionate caregivers Annie, Diane, Gina, Jean, and Jeffrey.

God bless and send comfort and peace to Marietta and family. My dearest memory of Sam was about 18 years ago. He was standing on his head for health benefits and I got to spot him make sure he did not fall. It was cute and funny we all were laughing. Warm condolences to Marietta and family.

My fondest memories of Sam was of him driving Marietta and me in his old neighborhood where he grew up. He and Marietta shared stories of people and places of a bygone time. We would end the trip with a stop at Mario's Lemonade stand.

My condolences to Marietta and his family.

May beautiful memories give you strength in these difficult hours.

Perhaps they are not stars in the sky but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy. May the lights shining down from the heavens bring you comfort.

With deepest sympathy and love,
Adrienne
