Grandma Marilyn a bittersweet goodbye to you. You are remembered as always having a kind word and smile for everyone . A class act would be a fitting definition of you and how you carried yourself. Patience, a good listener, you had compassion before you judged. You will be remembered always in the most positive light , even though your light has left us. Your legacy will on in the family you created and we thank them profusely for sharing you. Rest dear Marilyn, you so deserve it. Shalom.

Marilyn meant so much to me and to my family. I have never met a kinder, sweeter, more genuine person. She added so much to our lives and I will miss her dearly, as will my father, Lou Guthmann, who loved her so very much.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You’re mom (and dad) meant so much to our family for so many years. Her passing really is the end of a chapter. I have such warm memories of your mom, and the whole Harris family. Our families grew up together only one block apart, attending the same schools, surviving floods and tornado warnings, carpooling to Temple Judea, going apple picking and much more. Whenever I visited Skokie, she made time to see me, ask about my family, reminisce about times gone by and catch me up on the latest doings in Skokie. Her kindness was extraordinary.

I am so grateful my brother and I had a chance to visit with her when I was in town last Spring. Not knowing how many more opportunities I might have to see her, I asked her what life lessons she would want her children and grandchildren to know. Without hesitation, she responded “family”. No matter what happens, no matter what disagreements may arise, always remember that you are family and hold on to that no matter what. Each of the speakers at her funeral confirmed that your mom was successful in passing on that lesson.

I don’t know if her training as a speech therapist helped her develop good listening skills, or if she was drawn to speech therapy because she was such a good listener. Either way, she always listened before she spoke. And when she spoke, she always reflected what she had heard, reassuring the speaker that they had been listened to. What a tremendous kindness that is. And when she spoke, I don’t remember ever hearing her say an unkind word about another person. That in itself should be sufficient to reserve her place in Heaven. Your mom had a heart of gold.

May her memory be for a blessing and may you be comforted for your loss.

Warmly,

Steven Moss
