OBITUARY

Toby Meister, nee Bramson, age 89

Wife of the late Bernard Meister. Dear mother of Suzanne (Ron) Breitstein and Ken (Jodi) Meister. Proud Bubbe of Jake Meister, Rebecca Breitstein, Kyle Meister, and Ryan Breitstein. Cherished sister of the late Roz (the late Max) Dolins. Toby was a dedicated teacher for 40 years, instilling hard work, perseverance, and never taking the easy way. Former students later in their lives would reach out to her and relay how her guidance made a meaningful and positive impact in their lives. For her children, grandchildren, nephews, and nieces she defined unconditional love and support, showing up at every event, willing to do whatever was necessary for their happiness. She loved sports, movies, reading, crossword puzzles, and her much-loved dog Winston. Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to PAWS Chicago, 1997 North Clybourn Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60614 www.pawschicago.org. Arrangements by Chicago Jewish Funerals - Skokie Chapel, 847.229.8822, www.cjfinfo.com.

I’m very saddened to hear of Mrs. Meister’s passing. She was my English teacher in 8th grade at Stone School. We ((class of’78) were her first graduating class. I remember her being tough but fair , with a great sense of humor. Usually, when you have a teacher who is also a friend, it’s not a combination that works, but not with Mrs. Meister, she knew when she needed to be a teacher and when to be your friend. I fondly remember the Cubs opening day in 1978 when she told us that she heard that attendance wasn’t going to be taken that day. We all knew what that meant, and I know that if she could have, she would have joined us at Wrigley Field. To her family, I am so very sorry for your loss. While she is gone physically from us, she will always remain in the hearts of those who loved her, me included.

I always enjoyed Toby. She was a no nonsense teacher. She definitely left an impression . She tutored some of my nieces. I lost touch with her after leaving Stone to raise my family. Glad she lived to a ripe old age to enjoy her family. She was always so proud of her family. May she rest in peace.

I loved Toby very much and she will be greatly missed.
She was a kind, generous, happy human being and was a
joy to be with. My late husband, Jules, and I were proud to call
her family!!!!

I am 60 years old so it’s been a long time since I was in eighth grade and in Stone school. My parents had just gotten divorced and we moved into the city from Northbrook. Needless to say it was a big culture shock for me.. but I remember her so fondly and vividly and she made me feel at home. We never even discussed that I was Jewish too. Maybe it was just one of those unspoken connections.
