I’m so saddened to hear about the passing of this wonderful woman. She was a very dear friend to my mom, and her mother, Zelda, was also one of my mom’s most special friends. This loss feels especially personal—it’s a heartfelt connection to the past that I’ll always cherish.. Sending so much love and light during this most difficult time. May Phyllis’ memory always be a blessing. {HUGS}

I can't believe my friend-since-sixth grade has passed away. My deepest condolences to Allison, Julie, Jill and to Saul and to the rest of the family. Phyllis was so special for many reasons. She had so many friends. We had many memories throughout the years, one being that she phoned me every year on my birthday. Another being our visits to the Art Museum. One visit in particular when we sat outside in the atrium-like area for lunch while a warm Spring rain fell on the table's umbrella and we enjoyed a snug, dry lunch. It was a perfect day.
Phyllis, I will miss you so much. Love, Marge

I’ll miss Phyllis’s deeply. She was one of the warmest, kindest people

Phyllis was part of my life for 90+ years!! I knew her since I was three months old and she was three months older. My family moved into the upstairs duplex at 14?? North Jackson Street in Waukegan. Her family lived downstairs. Her mother and father and brother are so clear in my mind. And their dog, Dinky. We just recently talked about the apricot tree that grew so close to the building I could pick an apricot from our kitchen window.
I stayed with her overnight last April when I came to Illinois for my sister's funeral.

I remember her telling me how bad she felt when we parted school ways after kindergarten at Glen Flora. I was sent to St. Anastasia Catholic school instead of staying at Glen Flora.

Visiting back and forth when my family moved to Fond du Lac Wisconsin. Phyllis arranged for me to go on the Waukegan Township high school senior trip to New York and Washington because my school didn't do such things. I still have pictures of that great time.

I am in shock ...I feel quite a loss...

Phyllis was a wonderful auntie to me. She always remembered my birthday and sent me the most beautiful and interesting cards. I loved her annual visits to South Florida while I was living with my mom and Poppie Saul in the late 90’s during which I got to know her much better and experience her warmth up close. In the last several years, I also loved seeing her smile on the computer every Sunday during her weekly video chats with my folks when I would be visiting South Florida or when I was staying with them recently during my illness.

My first time staying at Phyllis’ with my folks was when Fred was still alive in the mid to late 90’s. My favorite part of that visit was a family gathering with tables set up on the patio for a meal and soccer game in the backyard when Lizzy made up the chant, “Uncle Fred, Uncle Fred, he’s the best and he likes red!“ I remember helping the kids in the garage make tickets to the soccer game. I also remember during this trip that Lizzy was very into palmistry! Other favorite memories from that trip were a visit to an outdoor art fair with Phyllis, my folks, and Jill during which I met the woman who, little did I know at the time, would become my beloved mother-in-law; getting to see the house my family lived in when my mom and Phyllis became friends in the late 60’s and when I was born a few years later; and going on the architectural boat tour with Phyllis and company and meeting up afterwards with additional Ruttenbergs at Resa’s for dinner.

I also got to stay at Phyllis’ with my folks in 2002. My favorite memories from that visit were going to the botanical gardens, going out to eat with the family at Elwood’s, and my first date at the Blind Faith Cafe with the man who would become my darling husband. I was especially grateful that we got to spend time with Gram Z during this visit, as she left this world only three days after we arrived home.

If it weren’t for Phyllis (and Julie & Leonie), I wouldn’t have my two favorite men in my life, my Poppie Saul and my spouse Larry. I am so grateful for her enormous heart and her longing that everyone belong to someone and have love in their life. I am so grateful for how she wove me into her big beautiful family two times over. I am so grateful that because of this her middle daughter Julie - who babysat me when I was an infant - became my step-cousin after Phyllis matchmade my mom and poppie, and then Julie became my sister-in-law after she matchmade my spouse and me (Julie is married to my husband’s brother Glenn. Confused yet?! ;-). Although the connections may be hard to follow, I am so very blessed that she forged them. What a legacy of Love!!!
