OBITUARY

Bennett (Ben) Koffman was the beloved and supportive husband/best friend of Elaine (nee Cooper) for 52 years. He cherished and was very proud of his daughters, Pauline (Doug) Woodson, Vera Koffman, and Shira Koffman (Lisa Hale) and his granddaughter, Tewa Woodson. He was the devoted son of the late Dorothy and Louis Koffman and the loving brother of David (Ruth) and Jennie Koffman.
Ben earned a PhD in government from the University of Virginia and passed the CPA exam. His first accounting job was with Thomas W. Havey & Co; he retired in 2010 as manager of partnership accounting after 28 years of service at Mayer Brown LLP.
Ben gave of himself to help others, for example assisting people prepare their tax returns for free, both through the Center for Economic Progress and on his own. For many years, he has helped a young man from Mexico practice his English and they became good friends. He made it a priority to be useful to widows.
Ben liked to play chess. He also loved his dogs, the late Eskies, Diana and Charcoal, and the Cotons, Bluma and Mazel. Through his kindness and patience, which were abundant, he taught them many tricks. He was a handyman, a consumer of news, a technology fan, a nature lover, and an exercise enthusiast.
Ben was a mensch - a person of integrity. He will be missed.

Ben and Elaine came into my life about 4-5 years ago. They were very thoughtful when I needed a ride to services on Friday nights. They also introduced me to helping serve brunch to those in need in Chicago. They were both service oriented and complimented each other. Ben was a good person and will be missed.

I first met Ben when his daughter Paiuline & my daughter Élan found themselves in the same kindergarten class. They have enjoyed an enduring friendship to this day. Ben was always so kind & genteel. On our earthly plane, I feel for all who will sorely miss Ben, but on the celestial plane, dear Ben will be welcomed as another angel.

Throughout my childhood in Lincolnwood, “Mr. Koffman” was a kind and gracious presence when Pauline and I hung out at her house. May his memory be a blessing.

Ed and I offer our sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Bennett was a kind, caring, brilliant, and thoughtful man. I remember how he frequently helped Elaine with social action projects, whether serving at the Uptown Cafe or assisting with technology to enhance our projects among others. B.J., as he was known in our high school in 'falls Church, Virginia, was an outstanding scholar and a kind friend to all. When we graduated in 1959 and everyone went tbeir separate ways, I lost track of him. but It is clear that he was beloved by all - a giver and helper - attributes we don't often find in others these. days. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Carole (Cline) Stipe.
