OBITUARY

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Simon Leonard Ganet, age 36, who passed away on May 9, 2026, after a courageous battle with leukemia, surrounded by the love of his family.

Simon was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Larry and Gale Ganet. He grew up alongside his twin brother, Elliot, older brother, Max, and younger sister, Nina, sharing a close bond with them throughout his life. He attended Naperville North High School and later attended Western Illinois University, forming lifelong friendships throughout his early years and college days. He met Annie, the love of his life, after walking into The Damen Tavern, and they were married on October 2, 2021. Simon brought joy and love to everyone he touched, whether it be through a smile, a joke, a “nice to meet you,” or a loaf of homemade banana bread. He was deeply loved by his family and friends for his warmth, humor, contagious optimism, and bravery.A man of many passions, Simon brought people together through curling, baseball, baking, and the communities he built around them. He faced life with curiosity, loyalty, determination, and a deep devotion to the people he loved most. Whether among lifelong friends or someone he had just met, Simon had a remarkable ability to make others feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. Simon is survived by his beloved wife, Anne Hoesly; his parents, Larry and Gale Ganet; his siblings, Max (Caitlin) Ganet, Elliot (Samantha) Ganet, and Nina Ganet; his sister-in-law Susan Hoesly and brother-in-law Jimmy DeBlasio; his nephews Walter, Harvey, Gordon, Akiva, and Teddy; and his parents-in-law, Michael and Nan Hoesly. Simon was preceded in death by his grandparents: Janet [Dustin] and Abner Ganet, Jane [Mendelssohn] and Mel Seigel, and Hazel [Price] and Gordon MacLennan.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 PM at Congregation Etz Chaim, 1710 South Highland Avenue, Lombard. I was fortunate to be apart of the inaugural CanAm curling tour to the Maritime provinces of Canada. This is where I met Simon along with 18 other fellow curlers. Simon brought the average age of our group down considerably and he was well loved by all. Simon and I shared an uber back to our hotel late on our last day where we secured our tour victory and celebrated hard, I mean really hard. Simon was in rare form and we had an uber ride I’ll never forget!
You are already greatly missed my friend.

I am proud to have shared three week with Simon curling on the USA team in the 2019 CANAM Cup of Curling in the Eastern Canadian provinces. He was the youngest member of the team and was always cheerful and ready to do whatever was needed to ensure the success of our tour. Thank you Simon . Good bless you, fare well.

Larry and Gale,

I have so many memories playing with Simon and Elliott at family parties and how hilarious they always were. Like always. Simon spent the most time with me and always was the one who invited me to play cards and just made me feel a part of whatever was going on. I can’t imaging the heartbreak you both feel losing a child. But try to rest knowing that Gigi is with him and he is truly in a better place as much as it hurts. God bless you both and Elliott, Nina and Max. I have the fondest memories of you all.
Love, Liz and Samantha

Mark and I remember Simon and the joy we felt everytime we saw him. We remember how he and Elliot would play. They'd wrestle, play sports, cards, and other games -all with enthusiasm and smiles (most of the time). I admired Simon's enjoyment and ability to bake and cook. I appreciated his enjoyment and respect he felt and offered to all family members - young and old. He laughed at my jokes, even if they weren't funny. I admired the way he'd have fun with his Mom, enjoying fun events together. He loved his dad for helping him become good at sports. He treasured and enjoyed his connections to his strongest supporters (along with Anne). I saw the true joy he felt when he was dancing with Anne at his wedding. He has been the poster human for the way he handled going through this horrible cancer journey. He did it all by smiling at others. Amazing. We loved him so so much.

What a joy it was to be around Simon and his twin, Elliot! I met them when my daughter, Caitlin, was dating her now-husband, Max, and of course I couldn't tell Simon and Elliot apart, which made being in their presence all the more fun! Simon and his family always made me feel so welcome to be part of their rambunctious group. He will be deeply missed by all of those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, dear Simon.

We grieve with you. This is a loss for which there is no words.
But there are memories that are sweet. I am looking at a photo of Simon as we were just beginning the Curling tour in Canada in November 2019. His relaxed smile seemed to capture a wonderful and kind spirit that I and 18 other teammates came to know and appreciate and treasure. He was able to slip into easy relationship with young and old, from both sides of the border. My last photo of Simon is with him enjoying our unexpected win in our little tour, and he is relaxed, happy, tired. Wonderful memories.
While our hearts break with and for his family and friends, we honor his life. Our prayers join yours.

Beloved Simon shared a sincerity and honesty about his life and insights. He made me feel somewhat included into his unbroken bond with Max, Nina and of course Elliot.
He always made sure we were comfortable and had what we needed when we would visit them.
We would often stay up very late hours joking around and watching TV in the lower living room. He would make us laugh and share stories after everyone else had gone to bed. He was interesting, kind, respectful and inclusive!
It was important to my girls and I to visit him in Chicago and to meet the girl of his dreams, Annie!
He had a casual friendliness that made us feel comfortable, loved and appreciated!
We love you Simon! You will always be in our hearts!

Everything about Simon brings a smile. His various activities, his love for Annie, his non-stop gratitude for the Dr.’s, nurses, caregivers, and his family.
I remember watching the huge circle of young men at his wedding all singing the Justin Timberlake songs. They all knew the words, the moves. It was such a picture of the unified friendship he had with such a huge group of guys! Every single memory of him is rich with joy, laughter, and fun. We will keep talking behind your back Simon, cause we all will love you forever.

We are neighbors of Anne's parents in Madison and had met Simon several times -- always warm, friendly, and fun to be around. We are with heavy hearts when we learned about Simon's passing. We had hopes of the medical teams success, but it was not to be. We should cherish the moments that he was here. His smile was wonderful and will be remembered.

Dear Gale and entire Ganet family,
We are so saddened to hear of Simon’s passing. Thinking of all of the boys tossing football at the New Castle bus stop and Simon’s ever smiling face is a favorite memory. Thinking of you and all who loved him and sending prayers❤️

I hadn't talked with or seen Simon since close to high school, but his death still hit hard and I've been thinking of him these last few weeks. I think really fondly back to the "G" locker row in high school and hearing a "What's up, Gibson?" between classes -- A welcoming, positive, and calming presence amidst the anxiety of those teenage years. In some ways he seemed older for his age back then--He was confident but without the ego of needing to be the center of attention and was kind in a genuine and steady way. He was funny and fun, but also mindful, responsible and mature. You could tell he was an older brother. I wasn't able to make his funeral service due to being out of state, but watched online and was touched by all the stories and love shared from his family and friends and Rabbi Jessie Weiner. My heart goes out to Simon's wife, family and friends, as I know the pain must be immense. I'll always treasure my memories with you, Simon.
