I knew Elle when she attended SAA. From the first time I met her when she was shadowing for the day, to the last time I saw her on graduation night, every time I talked to her was so special. Although I am an administrator and was not Elleâ??s teacher, I found Elle to be personable, funny, sweet and genuine. I imagine that Elle affected many people in the same way, and hopefully you can find comfort in knowing that her spirit will live on in everyone whose life she touched.

My heart breaks knowing this amazing girl has left us. I knew her from SAA and was immediately struck by how she was so at ease being herself. So much so, that I reached out to her mom to tell her how impressed I was by Elleâ??s mature and self assured nature. She simply had an amazing energy and was just so real and genuine. My daughter was proud to call Elle a friend and proud that Elle trusted her enough to came out to her so early on, which in turn helped my daughter come out a few years later. We have thought and spoken of Elle often, warmly, wishing we could reconnect and hoping she wasnâ??t suffering. To her parents and loved ones, please accept our deepest sympathies.

I feel blessed to have been Elle's teacher. We laughed often together--deep, belly laughs--ignited by her blazing wit; we marveled at the universe together and shared philosophical beliefs; Elle's charisma enlivened the hearts and minds of her classmates (they were often hypnotized by her wisdom); and I found daily inspiration in her courageous demand for social justice. Elle touched many lives in meaningful ways. What a powerful and precious soul.

I was so saddened to here of your daughter's passing. It's truly a shame that this world has lost such a kind, loving, and pure soul. I can honestly say that Elle touched my life in more ways than one as a kid, and I was lucky to be able to call her my best friend. I remember when we used to film a bunch of silly videos every day. We even had our own name for them, which was M & L. But my most fondest memory of Elle is the letters she would write me, saying how much she loved me and how thankful she was that we were friends. Those letters have sincerely touched my heart and I will always keep them with me. Words cannot describe how much I will miss her. I know she is in a better place, but THIS place was better with her in it. All my love and prayers are with you.

Dear Vanessa, Jason, friends, and family our deepest sorrow is with all of you at the untimely passing of Elle, who was truly an amazing spirit and ray of light. In the short that we knew her, she made an impact on us that has reverberated through Peter's life from their interaction. They both were able to give and receive the lessons of compassion and friendship pure love-- with each other. Vanessa I meant it sincerely when I told you and Elle that she had affected him. But, she wrote on my slate when she came to my lecture on the African American experience-- she smiled such a look of support that she forever stole a place into me heart. My daughter, Elise, was a classmate of Elle's - they were in acting class together. Elise is out of the country and could not be there Friday. She texted me right away to tell me about Elle's passing. She was upset, saying how Elle was in her class, and although she wasn't always at school because she was sick, when she was there, she was funny and kind. "Mom, she made me laugh." I know that Elle impacted my daughter's life in a positive way, and for that, thank you. She was clearly a kind spirit and a beautiful person. Peace to her, and peace to all of you. May her memories hug you tight.

As we were driving to Elle's service on Friday, the song "Heroes" by David Bowie came on the radio. Mark said, "Elle and I both liked David Bowie. He was the one singer that Elle, Miss Katauskas and I could agree was awesome." I said, "It's a good song for today. She was a hero." He said, "She was." And then..."Elle reminds me of Queen. She was complex. She was progressive. She always knew when to be overly intelligent, and when to dial it back and have fun. Much like Freddie Mercury, even when she was in so much pain, her creative spirit never waned. It was powerful. And inspiring."
