Sharlene Garfield, nee Garfien, age 76. Beloved wife for 54 years of Donald. Loving mother of James, Craig (Aimee Crow), Joseph (Becca Waller) and Elena (Modesto Duarte R.) Garfield. Proud grandmother of Ezra, Lila, Lula, Delcy, Chaya and Silvio. Dear sister of Barbara Garfien (Robert Berner) and the late Mark (Nancy) Garfien. Fond sister-in-law of Jerry Garfield and Ellen Perlstein. Beloved aunt of Debbie, Chuckie, Remi, Nessia, Zack, Catherine and Julia. Caring foster mom of Phillip, Rebecca, Rob, Joey, Emmy, Ellie, and Brittany. Born on the South side of Chicago on Sept.13, 1941 to Joseph & Reva Garfien. Attended South Shore High School & The University of Illinois at Champaign, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Taught elementary school in the Champaign, Illinois and Chicago City School systems. A foster mother for nearly twenty years, she provided loving care to seven foster children, and was awarded Foster Parent of the Year from Jewish Children’s Bureau. Her home was always open to friends, relatives, immigrants and students. For her contributions to the community, Elinor Place, the street on which she resided for 47 years, was given the honorary name "Sharlene Garfield Way" in 2013. Service is Monday September 18, 2017 at 11 am at Beth Emet The Free Synagogue, 1224 W. Dempster, Evanston, IL 60202. Interment Shalom. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beth Emet The Free Synagogue or Northshore University Healthsystem Ovarian Cancer Research-Gus Rodriquez, MD.
