OBITUARY
Long-time resident of River Hills, Lake Wylie, S.C. passed away May 24, 2015. Born, raised & educated in New York City, following his retirement December 1993, he & his wife, Esther, retired to Lake Wylie. There they designed & built their dream home on beautiful Lake Wylie, finally moving in in March, 1996. Coming to the area was the second best decision of his life, Fred would say; marrying Esther was clearly number one. Their marriage ended after 55 wondrous years when his beloved Esther was taken from him by cancer June 18, 2009. Fred graduated Brooklyn College with an A.B. in Economics & Columbia University with an M.S. in Business Administration. After starting a career in Finance/Factoring in N.Y.C., he served the U.S. NAVY, as a Senior Contracts Negotiator, purchasing electronics for the Bureau of Ships for two years. He then began a twenty year career with General Electric in Syracuse, N.Y. & Huntsville, Alabama. As Director of Marketing, he negotiated, managed & marketed military & space electronics programs to the Army, Navy, Air Force, U.S. intelligence agencies, & NASA. He led G.E.'s pioneering efforts into subcontracting radar & sonar equipment to major aerospace & defense system contractors. Building on the specialized training in contracting the Navy had provided, he entered the energy field with General Public Utilities Corp. & founded 3 organizations for them: Contracting for Power Plants Design & Construction, Fuels, & Materials Management. Fred also chartered, organized & staffed a new subsidiary, GPU Nuclear Corp. In these initial posts, & prior to retirement, Fred was corporately responsible for guidance & policies for $2B in annual purchases, inventories control & operations of 30 warehouses & a 4,000 vehicle fleet across 5 companies in Pennsylvania & N.J. As Chief Administrative Officer at GPU Nuclear Corp, Fred headed all the business management functions of: Contracting & Purchasing, Inventories Control & Warehousing, Finance, Human Resources, Security, Industrial Safety & Health & Facilities Management for three nuclear power plants & 2,400 employees. Following retirement, not slowing down for a minute, Fred was active in many Lake Wylie activities. He served as a movie critic for the Lake Wylie Magazine. He was a member of the programs committee for the Lions Club & The River Hills Think Tank, & founded a retired men's SCHMOOZE Club. Fred was asked to serve York County as Advisory Member of the Rock Hill & Ft Mill Area Transportation Study. Fred was also an avid & active supporter of the River Hills Rescue Squad, among other organizations. He served on the Board of the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina, based at The College of Charleston, & was a founding member & committee head for Temple Kol Ami, the first Jewish congregation in York County in 50 yrs. In Charlotte, Fred was a past President of Senior Scholars, a 300 member lecture society, & The 50 member Points of View retired men's club. Preceded in death by his younger sister, Barbara Gershoff, of Brooklyn, N.Y, survivors include his three children, Elise Glickman-Rao of Chicago, IL, Inez Elliott of Browns Summit, NC, & David Glickman of Irvine, CA, their spouses, Dr. Ping-fan Rao, Dennis Elliott, & Dorothy Glickman & five grandchildren, Jordan, Joshua, Joel, Logan & Samantha; & his fiancé, Bessie Meeks of Lake Wylie, South Carolina. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the River Hills Rescue Squad.
