OBITUARY

Helen M. Tulsky, 97, a joy filled soul who devoted herself for more than 40 years to helping young people succeed, died Friday due to complications of a stroke she suffered last weekend. Born Helen Shulamith Mailick, daughter of Abraham and Bessie Chapman, Tulsky spent 23 years teaching youth with behavioral, emotional and physical handicaps at Evanston Township High School and later another decade at Ida Crown Jewish Academy. Helen received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern in 1939, and went on to receive four master’s degrees over the course of her life. Though in the early 1970s, she faced the loss in just over a year of her husband, George, a physician; her daughter, Elizabeth; and her mother, Helen threw herself into helping others. She also loved the theatre, including an annual trip to the Shakespeare festival in Stratford, Ontario, as well as the opera, and the symphony. She was a life master of the American Contract Bridge League. But she took special joy in the accomplishments of her surviving children, sons Rick (Kim Rennard) of Evanston and David (Sindy) of Summit, N.J.; grandchildren Eric (Karen Sosa) of Chapel Hill N.C.; Elizabeth, of Chicago; and Emily, Gwyneth and Evan, of Summit; one great grandchild, Seth of Chapel Hill. Funeral services will be Monday 12 Noon at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the children’s outpatient program at Community Counseling Center of Chicago, www.c4chicago.org. Arrangements by Chicago Jewish Funerals- Skokie Chapel, 847.229.8822, www.cjinfo.com
