I still can't believe it. I am very sad for this news. I like think that the Prof. Philip Gossett will meet Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and so on and they will speak about their operas and they will play and sing togheter as old friends.
I had the honour of follow his lessons at Sapienza University in Rome. I am forever his student and I never forget him. He was a great man and musicologist. He worked with passion and his passion was contagious. He loved Opera and I discovered this genre thanks to him.
Thanks again. A very special person. I can't forget his human and art teaching.

Antonio Rostagno

Many have written how much we owe Philip Gossett, how much musicology and Italian music owe him. Even in the last few years during his illness his presence has been a guarantee for us all.
Every time we were in need of advice on important matters Philip was the right person to ask to, he was always immediately available. He was the one we could count on to settle difficult matters, his judgement and opinions widely recognized and respected. His authoritativeness was such he could easily get everybody to agree. And he was always there.
In the decade we shared the office at Rome University, his words were always a comfort to me in difficult times. I even look back on his legendary fits of anger with nostalgia.
Now my mind goes once more to him with a memory full of affection.
